Teacher returns to Tennessee for custody hearing

KNOXVILLE — A teacher who disappeared after her then-husband killed her 18-year-old lover has returned to Knoxville for a hearing over the custody of her two children.

Erin McLean, who appeared in court Wednesday, was having an affair with Sean Powell when Eric McLean shot him in the head in 2007. She met Powell while student teaching at his high school.

McLean, who was 29 at the time, dropped out of sight when she left Knoxville with the couple’s two sons, 12-year-old Eric and 9-year-old Ian, soon after the shooting.

She resurfaced in Texas, where a judge in Austin last week ordered the boys into the temporary custody of Eric McLean’s mother pending Wednesday’s hearing in Knoxville on a permanent custody arrangement.
