Epps: Five SEC items of interest for games of Oct. 11

1. Tony Franklin never had much of a chance

There’s a reason Franklin kept saying, “It’s not the Tony Franklin offense; it’s the Auburn offense.” With assistants Greg Knox, Hugh Nall and Eddie Gran — all at Auburn since 1999 — still allowed to influence the offense, Franklin couldn’t fully implement his revered schemes. Franklin needed his own assistants, not a trio used to the old way. Franklin wouldn’t budge, and now he’s gone.

2. Why is Urban Meyer always ranked ahead of Les Miles on the coaching scale?

Miles has more wins over ranked opponents, a far better road record, a better record in close games and three fewer losses to unranked teams. But Meyer is the genius and Miles is a nutty dude who danced in front of Snoop Dogg. OK, that last part may be true, but Miles deserves more respect. Obviously, in terms of earning respect, following Nick Saban is far different than replacing Ron Zook.

3. A quarterback from the Big 12 will win the Heisman

Sorry, Tim Tebow, Knowshon Moreno and Charles Scott. Quarterbacks from the Big 12 are putting up video game-like numbers, and either Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri or Texas Tech likely will play for a national title. Heisman voters love huge numbers from quarterbacks on highly successful teams.

4. Bobby Petrino is coming to Auburn when there’s an opening. Uh-oh

How delicious is this? Petrino, Auburn’s former offensive coordinator who conspired to replace head coach Tommy Tuberville, is returning to his old school for Saturday’s Arkansas-Auburn game. And the offensive coordinator’s position is open. Despite the history between Tuberville and Petrino, I’m guessing most Auburn fans wouldn’t mind seeing Petrino reassume his old position.

5. What’s up with the Harris Poll?

In the first Harris Poll, someone ranked a 1-3 Tennessee team No. 25 nationally. Despite winning their next game, the Volunteers lost their single vote. But a new team emerged with one vote in the poll: UCLA, 2-3 with a 59-point loss to BYU and a 31-10 loss to Arizona.
