Hamilton County: Man charged with murder in woman’s shooting death

Included in this article

Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department deputies have charged a 47-year-old man with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a woman this morning on Shorttail Springs Road.

Malcolm Witherow, 57, is accused of gunning down Melissa Hoover, 31, and then leaving her body on the side of the road. Deputies were called to the scene this morning at 9:53 a.m. and discovered the victim, who apparently was shot multiple times, said Janice Atkinson, a department spokeswoman.

After the shooting, Mr. Witherow attempted to check himself into the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute. Chattanooga police officers and sheriff’s deputies went to the hospital and arrested him, officials said.

The suspect is being held in the Hamilton County Jail, and no bond had been set as of mid-afternoon today, authorities said.

AhHa! Mr. Witherow tried the insanity game. When will people ever learn? Sheesh
