Hamilton County: Police arrest man in morning shooting death

Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department deputies have arrested a 57-year-old man in connection with a morning shooting on Shorttail Springs Road.

Malcolm Witherow is accused of gunning down his 31-year-old girlfriend and then leaving her body on the side of the road. Deputies were called to the scene this morning where they discovered the victim, who apparently was shot multiple times, said Janice Atkinson, a department spokeswoman.

After the shooting, Mr. Witherow attempted to check himself into the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute. Chattanooga police officers and sheriff’s deputies went to the hospital and arrested him, officials said.

No charges had been filed as of early afternoon and the victim’s name was not released pending notification of family members, authorities said.
