When he was 15, Bob Lubell thought he had received a message from Jimi Hendrix. Today, he is sure the only spiritual messages he gets come from God.
The president and co-founder of Partners for Christian Media and contemporary Christian radio station J103 says as much in his new book, “Finding God’s Frequency: My Encounter With the Power of Music, Miracles and the FM Dial.”
Mr. Lubell said the book is partly his life story and partly the saga of the start-up of the station.
“It’s inspirational in that it shares a lot of miracles in my life and miraculous answers to prayer in the start-up,” he said.
Raised from age 7 with a pair of drumsticks in his hand, Mr. Lubell said he was a rock drummer and drug user before he found God. Between his salvation in the early 1970s and the creation of J103 more than 20 years later, he was a night manager at McDonald’s, a radio disc jockey, a fire-extinguisher distributor and cellular-phone salesman/manager.
Today, the station reaches about 2 million people in four states on two frequencies and a worldwide audience through the Internet.
Mr. Lubell said the most gratifying result of J103’s success is the “positive influence it’s made in the community in changed lives” and the fact listeners appreciate its presence.
“We’re talking to a couple of generations now,” he said. “That’s pretty freaky to think about.”
