South Pittsburg High School band director resigns amid federal investigation

The band director at South Pittsburg High School, Gene Walsh, has resigned from his position amid a federal investigation, school officials said.

There have been no charges filed against Mr. Walsh, who resigned his position Friday, said Director of Marion County Schools Mark Griffith.

“I was notified by a federal investigator that Mr. Walsh was under investigation,” Mr. Griffith said. “They did not give any details as to the investigation and then he actually came into the high school with the federal investigator and then just voluntarily resigned.”

Mr. Griffith said he is not sure if Mr. Walsh’s home has been searched, but he assumes so. He also said there is no evidence or suspicion that Mr. Walsh acted inappropriately with students.

After Mr. Walsh resigned, students and parents were notified, Mr. Griffith said. School officials said they are currently looking for a new band director.
