Lila Buffington

Lila Rose "Judy" Buffington, 86, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, at NHC of Chattanooga.

Mrs. Buffington was raised in Joplin, Mo., and had live most of her life in the Chattanooga area, where she was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church.

Her daughter, Gail Cooper, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her five children, Michael Underwood, of Henagar, Ala., Ann Derryberry, of Ringgold, Ga., Gary Underwood, of Chattanooga, Dorothy Ogdon, of Joplin, and Inez Hamilton, of Joplin; 16 grandchildren; 20 great- grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Tillman Cal Jr.

Tillman Cal Jr., 52, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in a local hospital.

Katie Castleberry

Katie Castleberry, 79, of Hixson, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008.

Katie was a native and lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area. She was a former member of Central Baptist Church of Hixson and currently an active member of Falling Water Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Glenn Castleberry.

Katie is survived by her three children, the Rev. Kenneth L. Castleberry and his wife, Susan, Stephen B. Castleberry, Ph.D., and his wife, Susie, and Mark A. Castleberry; 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the North Chapel with her son, the Rev. Kenneth Castleberry, officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Harold Craig

Harold R. Craig, 71, a Chattanooga native, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, in Weatherford, Texas.

He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years service.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane Craig; five children, Ben, Bill, Mike, Richard and Elizabeth; Chattanooga area survivors include his mother, Lois Craig; sister, Pat Craig Roberts; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services and interment were Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Virginia Crain

Virginia Crain, 71, of St. Cloud, Fla., died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, while visiting family and friends.

She is survived by seven children; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Anne Gibson

Anne Ruth Chadwick Gibson, formerly of Chattanooga, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at Dogwood Forest of Dunwoody Assisted Living in Sandy Springs, Ga.

Mrs. Gibson was born Dec. 29, 1916, in Sulphur Springs, DeKalb County, Ala., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Floyd Chadwick. She attended the University of Alabama from 1935 to 1937.

Mrs. Gibson was a 45-year member of Central Presbyterian Church (Chattanooga) until its closing in 2000, at which time she became a member of First Presbyterian Church. At Central, she served as librarian and chairman of grounds. As a member of Missionary Ridge Garden Club, she served as roadside chairman for many years and enjoyed being a flower show judge.

Mrs. Gibson was a member of the Nancy Ward Chapter of the DAR and served on the Chattanooga Tree Advisory Commission for several terms. She was a life member of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation; a founding member of the Nature Conservancy in Tennessee; a charter member of the American Birding Association; and a founding member of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute.

Beginning in World War II, Mrs. Gibson was an American Red Cross nurse's aide and served the Red Cross in various capacities for over 25 years. She was an avid birdwatcher and traveled to East Africa, Manitoba, Panama, and many U.S. states to add to her birding lifelist. Anne spent the winter months for many years on Sanibel Island, Fla., where she enjoyed gardening, shell collecting and observing island wildlife. She supported the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra and numerous environmental organizations, instilling in her children a lifelong love of classical music and nature. She shared her keen interest in education and learning with friends and family and established both the Program for Excellence in Environmental Studies and a need-based scholarship fund at the McCallie School.

Mrs. Gibson was predeceased in 1994 by her husband, Carl Leland Gibson.

She is survived by a daughter, Lucinda Anne Gibson (Thomas A. Myers), of Sandy Springs; son, Jonathan Carl Gibson (Eliza D. Mabry), of Shrewsbury, Vt.; granddaughters, Cailey Susannah Mabry Gibson, of Somerville, Mass., and Sarah Chadwick Gibson, of Shrewsbury; sister, Maxine Chadwick Chrosniak (Mrs. Charles E.), of Charlotte, N.C.; brother, Kenneth Floyd Chadwick, of Shoup, Idaho; and nephew, Charles E. Chrosniak Jr., of Oakton, Va.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at First Presbyterian Church, Chattanooga.

The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Howard Gray Sr.

Howard F. Gray, Sr. 86, of Chattanooga, a devoted father, loving friend, and supportive grandfather, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, surrounded by his family in a local hospital.

A longtime resident of Chattanooga, he was born in Athens, Tenn., son of Harley Esco Gray and Callie Ethel Mina Walker Gray.

He served on the board of directors of the Orange Grove Center for many years and also as lieutenant governor of the Kiwanis Club, 3rd District commander of the American Legion and commander and adjunct of the Sam P. McConnell Post 159. He was a member of the Chattanooga Half Century Club and the International Order of Odd Fellows. He was a member of the DAV, recipient of the military order of the Purple Heart and the Forty & Eight Voiture. As a WWII veteran, he served in Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army in Europe, where he was awarded four battle stars.

He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters for over 65 years and served as the business manager of the Tri-State Carpenters District council over 20 years. He was instrumental in establishing the first health insurance and pension plans for the Carpenters Union, developing training programs for young persons learning the craft, and he was the secretary/treasurer of the Chattanooga Building Trades Council. He last retired from the Hamilton County school system after being a high school teacher for 10 years.

He was a member of Red Bank Masonic Lodge 717, Knights Templar of Tennessee, and the Alhambra Temple. A graduate of Hixson High School, he attended UT-Knoxville and earned a master's degree from the Andersonville Baptist Seminary. He was an ordained minister and had served as pastor of Shady Grove Baptist and New Salem Baptist churches.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Marie Charmie, Norma, June; and three brothers, Hubert C. (Thelma) Gray, Homer L. (Jenny Lou) Gray, Herman J. (Elizabeth) Gray; and two sisters, Della Mae Gray and Stella Brown, all from the Chattanooga area.

Those left to cherish his wonderful memory include his loving companion, Barbara Fairweather; and his children, Sandy (John) Suggs, of Chattanooga, Franklin Gray (Patty Matheny), of Miami, Fla., and Gigi (Norris) Johnston, of Lacey Springs, Ala.; five grandchildren, Heather (Byron) Smith, Kerry (Laura), Andy (Gail), Jake (Jessica), Travis Hutson; and two stepgrandchildren, John Suggs Jr. and Kristi (Payton) Greeno; two great-grandchildren, Preston and Nicholas Smith; and three stepgrandchildren, Wyatt Beavers, Lindsey and Addison Greeno; and brother-in-law, Wayne "Buster" Brown.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the North Chapel with Dr. Fred Steelman officiating.

Burial will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 12:30 until 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Irene Lewis

Irene Beam Lewis, of Lookout Valley, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in a local hospice health care facility.

The daughter of the late John "Lit" and Hazel Yancey Beam, she was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Lewis. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, W.M., Mack, John L. and Roy Beam.

Survivors include, Grady Humphries (special friend); children, Doyle (Carol) Lewis, of Lookout Valley, Regenia Lewis (Bill) Pratt, of Hixson, Deborah Lewis (Jim) Baker, of Knoxville, and Tim Lewis, of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Melissa Striker, Jeff (Beth) Lewis, Lindsey (Jason) Pope, Grant Keen, Tyler (Stephen) Marine, and Clint Baker; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Marcellia (Willis) Crawford, Betty Moore, Patricia (Tommy) Wade; and brothers, Jimmy (Carolyn) Beam, and Leon Beam. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Roger Prestwood

Roger Prestwood, 70, of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008.

Roger was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired electrician from Local 175. Roger was a member of Central Baptist Church of Hixson and was an avid Big Orange fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Amon and Ruth Prestwood.

Roger is survived by his wife of 46 years, Luciana "Lucy"; four children, Elizabeth (Michael) Laymon, Katherine (Billy) Walker, Scott Prestwood and Valerie (Joe) Anderson; four grandchildren, Amanda, Heather, Drew and Jacob; one great-grandson, Michael Pursley; two siblings, Barry (Karen) Prestwood and Ann (Robert) Schultz; several nieces and nephews.

Pauline Robinson

Pauline Marie Robinson, 84, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in a local hospital.

A native of Helenwood, Tenn., she had been a resident of the Chattanooga area most of her life. She was a member of Lupton City Baptist Church and was the wife of the late Virgil M. Robinson.

Survivors include two sons, Virgil R. (Sally) Robinson and Wally Robinson, all of Chattanooga; two daughters, Paula (Kelley) Tate, Mowbry Mountain, and Nancy (Doug) Beene, Chattanooga; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wilda Parks, Mississippi, and Francis Ervin, Chattanooga.

Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Kenton Hixson and Monty Parks officiating.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Wanda C. Schmidt, 86, of Chattanooga, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Schmidt was born in Charleston, Tenn., to Arthur and Cecil Clemenson and was retired after 50 years as a bookkeeper for Currey Contracting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Craig Schmidt Sr.; her parents; sisters, Frances Gomaz and Betty Currey; and brother, Bob Clemenson.

Surviving are her son, Craig (Angie) Schmidt; stepson, Phillip (Joan) Schmidt; grandchildren, Cassie (Jason) Cordell, Tyson Schmidt and Jill and Bo Bowling; and four great-grandchildren.

Beatrice Cameron

LaFAYETTE -- Beatrice West Cameron, passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at her home.

She was 94 years young and had lived most of her life in this area.

She was married to her devoted husband, Giles, for 62 years, until he passed away in 1997.

She was a loving mother to three daughters, Sylvia Coan, of Chicago, Becky Wrinn, of Isle of Palms, S.C., and Charlotte Lowery, of LaFayette.

Bea had many interests. Cooking, sewing, gardening and traveling were among her favorites; but her most prized accomplishments were her daughters, her five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was a member of LaFayette First Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008.

ROSSVILLE -- Gerald E. Mowery, 71, passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at a local hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and Rossville area, where he was a member of the River of Life Church in East Ridge and affiliated with the Empowerment Church in Chattanooga. Mr. Mowery was the owner/operator for over 35 years of the G.E.M. Repair Service.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Shirley Mowery; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa C. and Mitch Edmondson, of Chattanooga; two brothers, Larry E. Mowery, of Harrison and Charles S. Mowery, of Hixson; one granddaughter, Michelle (Nick) Grant, of Fort Oglethorpe; and several nieces and nephews.

FORT PAYNE -- Wilma Faye Downs, 81, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in Ringgold, Ga.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. CDT Tuesday, Sept. 9, from Rainsville Funeral Home chapel.

Burial will follow in Corinth Cemetery with Rainsville Funeral Home directing.

L.S. Moore

FORT PAYNE -- L.S. Sam Moore, 79, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, at DeKalb Regional Medical Center.

Funeral service will be held at noon CDT Tuesday, Sept. 9, from Rainsville Funeral Home chapel.

Burial will follow in Fuller Cemetery with Rainsville Funeral Home directing.

Kenneth Tinker

BRYANT -- Kenneth Eugene Tinker, 67, passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008.

He was a retired carpenter, was formerly employed with East Chattanooga Lumber Co. and was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Tinker; parents, Willard and Dorothy Reba Tinker; daughter, Donna Gene Tinker; and brother, Ledon Tinker.

Survivors include many family and friends.

Graveside funeral services will be held 1 p.m. EDT today in Payne Gap Cemetery with Brother Tommy Smith and Brother Jimmy Hixson officiating.

Visitation 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT today.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Mount Olive Baptist Church.

FYFFE -- The Rev. J.D. Young, 84, passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Marshall Medical Center South.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. CDT Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, from W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel.

Burial will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery in Cullman County, Ala.

Visitation after 10 a.m. CDT today.
