A maintenance man shot multiple times in the torso and arm Monday afternoon ran down a street for help before being taken to Memorial Hospital, according to Chattanooga police.
A “person of interest” was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, which took place about 2 p.m. in the 1500 block of Ryan Street, police said.
The victim, who worked at an apartment complex near Old Ringgold Road and off East Main Street, was sitting in his pickup truck and eating in the complex’s parking lot when someone began shooting at him, Chattanooga Police Department spokeswoman Lt. Kim Noorbergen said. He tried to drive away, but his truck apparently stalled and he ran to the intersection of Old Ringgold and Main, she said.
Police think the victim and the person taken into custody have had problems in the past, she said.
The victim, whose name was not released, was transferred to Erlanger hospital, police said. His condition was not known Monday evening.
Investigators remained at the on scene for more than two hours, attempting to determine how and why the incident occurred.
“We’re still talking to witnesses and still trying just to figure out what happened,” Lt. Noorbergen said.
The person of interest, thought to be between 18 and 25 years old, was not a resident of the complex but his mother lives there, Chattanooga police Lt. Tim Carroll said.
The maintenance man did not live at the complex, police said.
