Chattanooga: Powerboat races canceled

The annual Chattanooga U.S. Powerboat Championship Races and Speed Runs powerboat events have been canceled this year due to financial trouble and the rising cost of gas, organizers announced today.

The races usually take place in mid-October on the Tennessee River. This would have been the fourth year for the event, but organizer Jim Poplin said it wasn’t feasible.

“We feel that without the financial backing this year and with the present fuel situation and travel expense it is in the best interest to cancel the event,” Mr. Poplin said.

He vowed to return the races to Chattanooga in 2009, saying this venue was the most popular for the races nationally.

“We’ve already got the date on the national calendar, and we expect everyone to be back,” Mr. Poplin said.
