Chattanooga: Student, parents sue Baylor, ex-coach

A Baylor student, who alleges she was sexually assaulted and battered by former football coach Willie Idlette, and her parents are suing Mr. Idlette and the Baylor School for $4.5 million, according to a document filed in Hamilton County Circuit Court.

Mr. Idlette was fired from the school in November and indicted in February on seven counts of statutory rape by an authority figure involving a 17-year-old Baylor School student, records show.

The lawsuit alleges that Baylor negligently hired Mr. Idlette and did not supervise him during his employment. Other employees knew Mr. Idlette allowed the student into his apartment on Baylor’s property but ignored the situation, according to the suit. Another employee blamed the student for the situation, according to the lawsuit.

The student suffered physical and mental injuries, and she and her parents are asking for $3 million in compensatory damages and $1.5 million for punitive damages, as well as a trial by jury, according to the lawsuit.

The suit alleges the incidents took place from Sept. 12, 2007, through November of that year.

The woman and her parents have hired Martin J. Levitt and David Rotroff as attorneys. The trial will not take place soon and may not occur within a year because of the time it will take to discover evidence, according to Mr. Levitt’s office.

Baylor officials deny the allegations, according to a statement released by the school Friday.

“Due to the sensitive nature of this case and the fact that it is in litigation, I cannot comment beyond stating that Baylor vigorously denies these allegations,” spokeswoman Barbara Kennedy said.
