Nearly 40 private school students already have pre-registered for the new East Hamilton Middle-High school, still almost a year away from opening.

Principal Pam Dantzler said most of the transfers from private school took place in the first week of pre-registration, which continues until Sept. 30.

“We’ve got 37 coming in from private schools just so far, so that’s really good,” said principal Pam Dantzler. “The private school sector seems to be very, very interested in the new school, and that’s wonderful.”

Michelle White, whose two children currently attend Westview Elementary, said she wasn’t surprised by the interest in new school.

“This is the first public school out in this area that’s not a replacement school for the past 30 years. It was needed, and I think everybody will be excited about going,” she said. “Signal Mountain has had a tremendous number of students who have left (private school for the new public school), and we’re hoping to have the same kind of influx into our school as well.”

It is important to get an accurate count of students during pre-registration, because teachers will be hired beginning Oct. 1, Ms. White said. As part of the application, students can also fill out an interest survey to give administrators an idea of which extracurricular activities and electives they are most interested in.

Potential courses and clubs include journalism, Web design, pottery, chess and psychology. Sports options range from football, baseball and basketball to wrestling, dance and bowling.

Ms. Dantzler said it was important to her that she give students an opportunity to give suggestions on what they’d like to see at the school.

“We’re trying to give students a lot of input early on,” she said. “What specific sports would they be interested in initially? I need to know if we have enough to build a team.”
