Hamilton County: Education reform meeting tentatively set

Hamilton County Commissioner Warren Mackey and school board Chairman Kenny Smith have tentatively scheduled a meeting between commissioners and school board members for Oct. 21 to discuss preparing students for coming industrial jobs.

Soon after Volkswagen announced it would be building an assembly plant in Chattanooga, County Mayor Claude Ramsey gave officials 100 days to develop a plan to better prepare students for those jobs.

Mr. Smith said he did not believe the schools are doing a good job of preparing students for those types of jobs. Commissioner Richard Casavant took exception to that comment, saying it seemed to imply that all schools and all students in the county are doing a bad job.

Mr. Smith clarified that he was specifically referring to vocational education.
