Hamilton County: Tax freeze meeting tonight

Hamilton County Commissioner Bill Hullander will be holding a meeting in his district this evening to discuss a proposal to freeze property taxes at their current levels or provide a match to state tax rebates for seniors 65 or older.

The commission has been discussing the freeze proposal for more than a year, but commissioners have found it to be a very complicated and difficult-to-administer program. Several commissioners have offered the relief match as an alternative to the freeze.

The meeting is at the Highway 58 Volunteer Training Center in Harrison at 6 p.m.

Commissioner Curtis Adams has called for a vote on both proposals Dec. 17.

Hamilton County tax bills for this year start shipping out today, officials announced. They will continue to go out through Tuesday.

Property tax payments officially are due Wednesday, but there is no penalty for not paying until Feb. 28.
