Walter Lee Henry loved motorcycles — riding them, repairing them and owning them.
The man, who friends said was in his late 40s, was riding one of his four bikes home when he was killed during a collision Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Moore and Brainerd roads. His death was the city’s sixth motorcycle fatality of the year and fourth in the last two months, according to Chattanooga Police Department data.
“He was not a new rider,” said friend Allen Holmes. “He’s an expert. That’s what he does. He rides bikes.”
Chattanooga police said Mr. Henry and Reginald Cooper, the driver of a white Chevy Tahoe, were approaching the intersection of Moore and Brainerd roads driving on Moore in opposite directions when the light turned yellow. The driver of the Tahoe committed to turning and Mr. Henry sped up to make it through the light when the vehicles collided in the intersection, Chattanooga Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary said.
“Unfortunately, the rider on the motorcycle was pinned up under the vehicle and died as a result of his injuries at the scene of the accident,” she said.
Mr. Cooper was not injured.
The man was wearing a helmet and full safety gear. Traffic investigators are continuing to investigate the accident, which will include reviewing video from the traffic camera at the intersection, Sgt. Weary said.
