BlueCross eyes more telecommuting

Even as BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee wraps up work on its new $299 million home office, the insurer is looking at getting into telecommuting jobs in a big way, an official said today.

“We’ll probably do a telecommuting initiative in a big way in 12 to 24 months,” said Dan Jacobson, the insurer’s vice president for properties, in remarks to the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce’s Market Center Council.

BlueCross eventually plans to put 4,300 people in the new Cameron Hill headquarters, expected to be finished by summer, as it consolidates operations from across the city.

But, growth by the Chattanooga-based insurer has prompted it to keep about 500 workers in the Miller Building on Broad Street, which it intends to now hold onto for several years.

Mr. Jacobson said BlueCross locally only has about 100 people who telecommute from their homes currently.

On a percentage basis, he said, the insurer does more telecommuting in Memphis and other cities, he said.

“It lowers costs,” Mr. Jacobson said. “It offers an option that attracts a wider array of employees.”

Telecommuters in the Chattanooga & surrounding areas that are looking for an escape from always working solo should consider visiting the new coworking space in downtown Chattanooga. Opened in conjuction with our executive office suites, we are located conveniently in the business district close to the river & restaurants with plenty of parking. We have different memberships to choose from based on usage of space & budget. Coworking spaces provide a friendly & professional environment with the interaction you may want from others to network & share ideas. Jellies, a type of meet & greet work event, are held every other Friday to introduce this concept. These are free to attend with wi-fi, work space & coffee provided. Just bring your laptop & go to work. For more information please check out twitter.com/conciergelevel, wiki.coworking.info/CoworkingChattanooga or info@theconciergelevel.com
