Tiger and Phil start charge at Masters

By Jay Greeson

AUGUSTA, Ga. — And they’re off under a glorious day here at Augusta National Golf Club.

The much-hyped, much-anticipated pairing of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson got off to a less-than-glorious start.

Woods, who made double-bogey at No. 1 Saturday hooked his tee shot left into the trees to start the 1:35 p.m. group. Mickelson went right into the massive fairway bunker.

With both stars sitting seven shots behind the leaders, every shot will be crucial today — and it’s hardly the start either would have liked on a Masters Sunday that featured near-perfect conditions. Both players managed to save par on No. 1.

Defending champion Trevor Immelman, who will is 12 shots behind co-leaders Kenny Perry and Angel Cabrera, teed off before noon and was 1 under through 10 holes Sunday.

Steve Flesch made the biggest jump early Sunday. Flesch went par-eagle-birdie on his first three, moving to 6 under for the tournament.

The co-leaders tee off at 2:35 p.m. today.
