Letter from the Editor and Publisher

Included in this article:      6 Comments

For us, building and sustaining a relationship with readers is fundamental.

Newspapers nurture the connections that occur through the linking of every day events that shape the lives of a community.

We celebrate together, and we share the pain of a loss.

We recognize weddings and anniversaries and often provide the words that complete a life.

Relationships are built on sharing, and that is what we are doing today.

There are changes in the Times Free Press, and we want you to know the impact on your reading experience.

The Taste section now leads our regular Wednesday features. Anne Braly continues to offer her gastronomic insights. On Saturday the Home & Garden content will move to the lead position of the LIFE section.

New location, yes, but no loss in the content you have come to expect in the Times Free Press.

Through our news pages we have created connections with readers in Chattanooga and the 15 surrounding counties. Readers in North Georgia will continue to start each day with a region-specific front page. Readers in the 15 counties that surround Chattanooga will find comprehensive region news in the B section.

These changes to the Times Free Press are a result of responding to a slowdown in the economy. We have made strategic decisions, including reductions of the newsroom staff, to address shortfalls in revenues while at the same time minimizing the impact on the news product provided to you.

We will continue to make strategic decisions that provide you with the most comprehensive news in print and online while managing the challenges of the economy.

Thank you for reading the Times Free Press.

Aside from Tom Griscom and Anne Braly, who's still at the TFP? You've let almost 2 dozen go since the beginning of the year.

I would like to say that all the work at the VW plant would help if they would hire local people but they dont also if people think there going to hire local people to work inside the plant after construction, there wrong because all the auto workers laid off around the united states will relocate here and they will hire people all ready trained the people up north work there all there life then retire here now they will be able to work here an retire here who would you hire somebody you have to train or somebody already trained if people think there using local people to build it go look at the hotels and see how many out of town tags you see also why i am venting thats your tax money there spending we cant keep schools open also i would not drive a VW if you got 2 for 1

Bit of sour grapes there.

There is no question who I would hire...unskilled, untrained and untested or skilled and ready to work. No contest.

The only question is who is cheaper for the company in the long run. VW is here to make money not provide welfare.

Maybe VW will provide the incentive for our ambitious young to stay here and work instead of going to Atlanta, etc.

Something a bit more on-topic now:

Mr. Griscom -- I sincerely hope your letter only informs us of your newspaper's updated content and is not a preliminary "goodbye". Your newspaper is one of the very few that provides both sides of almost every issue. It would be a serious loss for Chattanooga and environs should it leave us. It forms my homepage and the first thing I browse each morning. [I know...that is part of the problem -- low subscriptions due to the Internet.]

The TFP is one of the most right-wing, anti-common sense papers in the country. They most certainly do not provide both sides of every issue, unless those two sides are the right wing and the far right wing. The fact that rolando thinks that the TFP is a good paper is all the evidence one needs to know that the TFP = fox news in print = right wing propaganda. Chattanooga is not Backwater, West Vrginia or Klantown, Mississippi. This very moderate, quite nice city that is filled with people of ALL walks of life deserves much better than a paper that always takes the side of the ignorant.

As someone who is left of center, I would say that cave-demon must be far left to think that the TFP is right wing.

It's one of the few papers that has liberal and conservative editorial pages. It has a liberal cartoonist.

The reporters are largely down the middle.

If it seems right or left, it's only your point of view.

I've been a subscriber to the NY Times, The Christian Science Monitor, and both the Chattanooga Times and Free-Press. Since the merger, I have to say that I've been impressed with the TFP's balanced coverage.

That being said, I wished the editor had said exactly what prompted this article. I had to hear about it on the radio this morning. The newsroom IS part of Chattanooga.

It's not a sin to assign a reporter to cover the events there.

Talk about cliffhangers...shades of Pauline. C'mon, moonpie, have a heart. WHAT prompted the article???

Agree wholeheartedly with the rest of your post.
