Hail to the Hunk: President-elect Obama's workouts set tone for national fitness

Barack Obama prevailed in last year’s presidential election, and he’s tough to match in fitness, too.

According to news reports, he squeezed daily workouts into his grueling campaign schedule.

Despite a lingering smoking habit, the 47-year-old president-elect reportedly eats healthy, too, favoring foods such as grilled fish, steamed broccoli, chocolate roasted-peanut protein bars and Black Forest Berry Honest Tea.

A report on politico.com notes that President-elect Obama was recently spotted in a Washington, D.C., area sports club, where his workout included standing triceps presses, shoulder presses, overhead dumbbell extensions (50 pounds) and calf raises (80 pounds).

Pundits predict the White House baseball field will give way to a basketball court, as the president-elect is an avid hoops player.

How can you achieve the same results?

Work out, work out, work out, experts say.

Since the secret to Mr. Obama’s dedication lies simply in his commitment, anyone can duplicate his achievements. All you have to do is try, experts say.

How can you tap into your own inner commitment?

“I tell all my clients to say: Make today better than yesterday,” said Pennie Norris, personal training director at Jack Silberman’s Fitness Center in East Brainerd. “If you did 10 minutes on the treadmill yesterday, do 15 minutes today. It’s not a process, it’s an overnight thing.”

Think about the benefits of exercise, said Jack Bell, owner of Absolute Fit in Fort Oglethorpe.

Working out clears your head, relieves stress and stimulates creative thinking, he said. And if that doesn’t work, take the new president as your example.

“If the busiest man in the world can do it,” said Mr. Bell, “you can darn sure do it, too.”
