KNOXVILLE — Offensive lineman Ramone Johnson and wide receiver E.J. Abrams-Ward have been dismissed from the University of Tennessee football program, according to a Thursday afternoon release.
The UT athletic department’s release was brief and vague, simply mentioning that the players were “dismissed from the team for disciplinary reasons.” It does not appear to be a legal issue, but multiple officials did not immediately disclose specifics.
Johnson, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound rising junior from Chicago, was expected to compete for a starting tackle position. He and former offensive lineman Darrius Myers (who has also been dismissed) were sidelined two games last season for a suspension former UT coach Phillip Fulmer said involved “academics and other stuff.”
Ward, a 6-5, 210-pound receiver, redshirted last season after arriving with plenty of hype from North Carolina’s Thomasville High School. UT’s former staff raved about Ward’s potential, but the former high school quarterback sat out last season while learning the receiver position.
