2 Birmingham supervisors suspended in beating case

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Police Chief A.C. Roper says two Birmingham police supervisors have been suspended in connection with the 2008 police beating of an already-unconscious suspect that was captured on videotape.

Roper said a sergeant will be suspended 30 days without pay and be reassigned from an investigative unit to a patrol unit. He said a captain will get 15 days suspension without pay.

The chief did not elaborate and did not identify the two, citing federal and state investigations into the incident.

A video of the beating surfaced in March when an assistant prosecutor with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office discovered it, prompting an investigation by the police department.

The video was made public in May and led to firing of five veteran police officers.
