Parent-child fitness classes

by Laura Galbraith

At The Little Gym on East Brainerd Road the smiles and squeals of youngsters create a light-hearted atmosphere.

“We really encourage the parents to be as involved as they are comfortable being,” said Keith Moreland, the instructor of a parent/child classes.

Gymnastics classes are available for parents with infants ages 4 months to 3 years.

“We’re trying to teach the kids proper motion,” said Mr. Moreland. “But there’s a big social component. Jump with your friends, run with your friends and sing with your friends.”

Aaron and Christina Nutter, of Ooltewah, have been bringing their 14-month-old daughter, Sabrina, to the Little Gym for almost a year. Mr. Nutter said he believes the class is beneficial.

“She seems a lot more coordinated,” he said. “She couldn’t even walk when we first brought her here. She could barely crawl, and now she’s up and running around and going nuts.”

Similar “Mommy and Me” gymnastic classes are offered at the Sports Barn North on Hamill Road near Northgate Mall.

“(Kids) learn a little bit about their balancing, their motor skills, coordination and learning how to be in a fitness environment and a classroom environment,” said Karen Evans, who is in charge of the youth programs at the Sports Barn North.
