Tennessee: UT system may save $5.6 million by cutting VPs

Three UT vice president may lose their jobs, UT Interim President Jan Simek announced today at a UT board meeting in Knoxville.

Of the 14 existing vice president, only seven positions will remain. Some people will be moved into other titles, but three people will be laid off if a proposed change to administration is passed by the UT Board of Trustees in June.

The remaining vice presidential positions will be: vice president for academic affairs and student success, chief human resources officer, vice president for public and government relations, executive vice president of research, vice president for equity and diversity, vice president of development and alumni affairs and senior vice president and chief executive officer.

Dr. Simek said the administrative cuts announced today will save $5.6 million.

And more cuts could be on the way, he said.

The board has set a meeting in August to discuss whether campuses should take responsible for more of what the system is doing. The discussion could trigger another round of administration trimming, intended to streamline operations.

In that August meeting, Dr. Simek said he want to talk about moving the men's and women's athletic staff, which represents Knoxville athletics and currently reports to the president, onto the Knoxville campus. He also said he want to discuss changing the position of vice president for equity and diversity.
