Bethpage Black will be lacking Scenic City flavor during this year’s U.S. Open golf tournament.

Five golfers with ties to Chattanooga failed to reach the Open during sectional qualifying Monday.

Former Baylor golfer Harris English came the closest by tying for 14th with a 4-under-par 140 over 36 holes at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, Ga.

His University of Georgia teammate the last two years, Adam Mitchell of McCallie, shot 7 over at two suburban Memphis courses and tied for 73rd.

John Kimbell of LaFayette withdrew from competition at Hawks Ridge, and former McCallie and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Bryce Ledford withdrew from his second round in Memphis.

“My whole group withdrew,” said Ledford, who played with Derek Fathauer and Jay Williamson. “I shot 2 over in the morning and I was around par, but on 8 I hit it out of bounds and my provisional was behind a tree. I had no chance and I didn’t want to keep walking.”

Ledford said he saved his energy for a Hooters Tour event beginning Thursday in Tunica, Miss. But he enjoyed playing 27 holes with Williamson, a PGA Tour veteran.

“He pretty much said I have the game to get out there,” Ledford said. “I want to make the Open, but it’s not going to be this year.”

Peter Tomasulo earned medalist honors at 9 under. He shot a 7-under 64 at Germantown Country Club in the morning and a 2-under 69 at Ridgeway Country Club in the afternoon.

At Hawks Ridge, English shot 70 in the morning round with a 35 on each side. The UGA rising junior reached 5 under for the tournament after 27 holes after shooting 33 on the front, but he shot 37 on the back nine.

Kimbell, a Nationwide Tour pro, shot 5 under in the morning round at Hawks Ridge. But he withdrew after posting only nine holes in the afternoon. Kimbell likely would have needed to shoot a 30 or better over his last nine holes to get one of the three spots awarded at that course.

Matthew Kuchar of Atlanta and Matt Nagy of Buena Vista, Ga., and Kennesaw State University’s team tied for medalist honors at 10 under. Recent Georgia Tech grad Cameron Tringale shot 9 under for the last spot.

Australian David McKenzie, who lists his hometown as Hixson, tied for 43rd in Columbus, Ohio.
