Chattanooga: Council may wait on nightclub noise ordinance

The Chattanooga City Council may vote tonight to table an ordinance requiring all nightclubs to be 1,000 feet away from residential areas.

During the Legal and Legislative Committee meeting today, Councilman Peter Murphy said more legwork needed to be conducted on the proposed legislation.

“I don’t think this ordinance is ready to be voted on tonight,” he said.

As a demonstration, council members went outside while a Parks and Recreation employee drove his Chevrolet sport utility vehicle down 10th Street with his stereo blasting until he reached 1,000 feet. The bass on the vehicle was barely noticeable.

“A thousand feet away is a long way,” Mr. Murphy said.
