Calhoun’s Rogers commits to Georgia

Receiver is nation’s No. 22 prospect

CALHOUN, Ga. — Name a recruiting pitch and Da’Rick Rogers has heard it. But when the Calhoun High School receiver announced Tuesday that he will be a Georgia Bulldog, his decision came down to the simplest of things.

“I chose Georgia because of the relationships, getting to know these coaches in and out,” said the 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior. “They wanted to get to know me as a person and about my academics, and that was important.”

Rogers is a consensus four-star, top-10 receiver nationally, as rated by recruiting services. He is listed as the 22nd overall prospect in the country and the state’s top prospect according to Rivals.com. He has been timed at 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash, has recorded a 40-inch vertical jump and has long-jumped 11 feet.

Mike Nance, whom Rogers describes as a father figure and who is the father of his best friend, believes the Bulldogs have hit the jackpot.

“I’ve traveled all over the nation and I’ve never seen a better athlete,” Nance said. “Georgia is extremely fortunate. In all honesty, he could play for them right now.”

Rogers had more than 50 offers and said he chose Georgia over Florida, Mississippi State, LSU, Florida State and Southern California. He turned down several invitations to make an official visit to Florida and said he doesn’t regret the decision.

“Urban Meyer tried really hard to get me to come down, but Georgia just took me by storm,” Rogers said. “Telling Coach Meyer and (Mississippi State coach) Dan Mullen will be the two toughest calls. It was great to have all the offers, but choosing Georgia was right, and now I can focus on my senior season so we can win a state championship.

Rogers helped lead Calhoun to the Class AA championship game as a junior with 66 catches, 1,300 yards and 11 touchdowns. He admits former Calhoun and current Georgia receiver Kris Durham played a part in his decision.

“Kris had a great influence on me,” said Rogers, who also will join A.J. Green, Marlon Brown and Orson Charles on the UGA receiving depth chart. “He told me how good the guys are down there, how welcome I would be and how I would have a home there. It’s going to be great. I think we’ll have a good little group out there.”

Rogers also said he has a plan when the Bulldogs meet Vanderbilt, where Nash Nance, Mike’s son, committed during the same ceremony Tuesday.

“It’s going to be great,” Rogers smiled. “I already told him, when I score my first touchdown, I’m going to run over to the other sideline and let him know I’m here. It’s going to be on then.”
