Gardeners can take home some of the latest hybridized daylilies available Sunday when the Tennessee Valley Daylily Society holds its annual show and sale at Northgate Mall. The show also will feature daylilies of the future.
"So many people depend on the Internet and catalogs to see what's out there, but here's an opportunity to see some of the prettiest flowers you can imagine and some of the most current available," said show publicity chairman Louis Prosterman.
About 40 local and out-of-town growers will exhibiting 200 to 300 flowers. Some will be bringing seedlings that are not yet registered in hopes of winning recognition and awards.
"The seedlings are the very latest," Mr. Prosterman said.
The newest seedlings will not be sold, but there will be plenty of lilies dug up from area gardens that will be, he said.
The show, held for more than 25 years in Chattanooga, begins with judging of the daylilies, followed by the sale starting at 1 p.m.
More than 40,000 varieties of daylilies are grown today, Mr. Prosterman said. The show includes a wide range, from double daylilies that resemble a double rose with duplicate petals and those with blooms ranging from 2 inches to 7 inches.
Anyone is welcome to enter a daylily in the show but must do so by 10:30 a.m.
