Golf pants take a turn to the wild side

Keith Burdette, 43, doesn't care if his crazy attire turns heads. In fact, he likes it.

The assistant golf professional at The Bear Trace golf course at Harrison Bay State Park dons pants with wild prints when he's on the course, mostly to get a reaction from his peers.

"And, truthfully, I really like the pants," he said, noting that he has about 23 pairs. "The first few years it was about crazy shirts, but for some reason companies got away from making the ones I used to buy, so I started searching around and stumbled onto loudmouthgolf.com."

He said he can't buy these fashions locally. Loudmouth Golf, a company based in California, specializes in golf attire.

Scott Woodworth, the company's CEO and founder, said he came up with the idea of manufacturing outrageous clothing for golfers after seeing a poster of the Three Stooges in crazy clothing. And, he pointed out, "Golf was invented by gents wearing plaid skirts. So there's nothing really out-of-bounds, is there?"

At 6-feet, 275 pounds, Mr. Burdette said his taste in fashion doesn't go unnoticed. In fact, his nickname "Punkin," a derivative of "pumpkin," was given to him several years when he wore bright orange printed pants with an orange shirt. The name stuck, he said.

"They should be glad I'm wearing the pants instead of the traditional knickers," he said. "I don't have the body type for knickers."

Mr. Burdette said he doesn't mind the relentless ribbing from fellow golfers.

"It's all in fun," he said. "And my fashion style is catching on. There are four or five guys here now wearing the crazy pants as well. I'm a trendsetter."

Mr. Woodworth said interest in the golf fashions varies by age.

"The young golfers think it's new and hip," he said. "The middle ages guys are just hammerheads, and the older golfer appreciates our bringing back 'the look.' "

Mr. Woodworth said that though Tiger Woods would "be afraid" to wear Loudmouth golf pants, professional golfer John Daly can often be seen in them.

"I'm always looking for more," Mr. Burdette said, noting that he searches the Web site a couple of times each week looking for new prints. "The pants, part cotton and Spandex, are incredibly comfortable, and the measurements are spot on. I've never had to have them altered."

About Keith Burdette

A native of Chattanooga, he didn't start playing golf until he was age 28. Though frustrated with the sport, two years later he bought a set of clubs and developed his skills. To date, he has played 534 golf courses across the United States. Prior to becoming an assistant professional golfer, he was a social worker and business owner.
