Chattanooga: 10 arrested in gang shootout

Eight men and two juveniles were behind bars late Wednesday after an early morning shootout that sent a bullet flying into a sleeping teenager’s bedroom.

Chattanooga police said the shooting likely was gang-related — the product of a rivalry between groups of young black men — that put innocent bystanders in the crossfire.

“They shot a bullet right through my daughter’s bedroom wall, just a foot above where she lays her head at night,” said Tara Dill, whose family lives next door to where police say a crowd of young men exchanged gunfire about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

All 10 suspects were charged with felony reckless endangerment and vandalism, police said.

The shootout occurred at 7749 Holiday Hills Circle, just off Bonny Oaks Drive, said Lt. Kim Noorbergen, police spokeswoman. Police arrested six men on the porch of that house and confiscated a 9 mm Tech 9 handgun and another smaller-caliber weapon, she said.

The porch was littered with shell casings, and the men were telling inconsistent stories, Lt. Noorbergen said.

Police found and arrested four other men believed to be involved in the shooting on nearby Nautical Way, she said. Those suspects’ vehicle, a gray Dodge Durango, had a bullet hole in the exterior and shell casings inside, the lieutenant said.

“The six males on the porch told officers they were sitting on the porch and someone drove by and shot at them, but the officers found numerous inconsistencies in their stories,” Lt. Noorbergen said. “The four males in the Durango also told different stories, and officers found inconsistencies in their reports.

“It was determined all of these subjects were being untruthful and lying to the officers.”

Ms. Dill said the situation has convinced her family it’s time to move.

“This is a great neighborhood,” she said. “But we’re surrounded by two duplexes ... we’re just going to pack up and put the house up for sale. We love this house, but just 15 minutes before the shooting, my daughter had friends in her room watching a movie, walking around.”

She shuddered at the idea that her children or their guests could have been injured.

“We’re not going to take any chances,” Ms. Dill said. “That could have been my child or someone else’s who was standing there when that bullet struck.”
