BLOG: Big-city distractions lead to upsets

Just some quick thoughts on the NCAA men’s tournament games, because I missed most of them due to the women’s news conferences:

First of all, my friend Sarah, who probably has never watched a basketball game in her life, went 16-for-16 yesterday. Doesn’t it always work out like that? I was more impressed that she picked Western Kentucky over Illinois. Why did she do that? She said:

“Well, think about it. The Illinois players are near Chicago. That’s got to be a huge distraction. But at Western Kentucky, there can’t be anything else to do but play basketball. I don’t know exactly where that is, but there can’t be much going on. I bet those players just play basketball all the time.”

So there you go. I will now light my bracket on fire.

I’m like a lot of people who picked Tennessee or support the Vols: Take it to the hole, Tyler Smith! And good to see Bob Huggins back in tournament form. Why did I pick West Virginia in the Elite Elite again? I’m also glad I talked up Arizona State’s James Harden and then picked Temple in the Sweet 16. What a disastrous day.

I mean, obviously I should have picked Arizona State because there’s so many more distractions in Philadelphia, home of Temple. What was I thinking? And I’ve been to Dayton. Nothing to do there. At least West Virginia is a big school. Next year I’m letting Sarah fill out my bracket with her Distractions Philosophy. (So good it warrants capital letters.)
