Pedestrian struck by vehicle dies

Third person held in rapper’s death

Chattanooga police have arrested a third suspect in connection with the robbery and homicide that killed local rapper Robert Brown.

Julian Maurice Smith Jr. was arrested Thursday, said Sgt. Jerri Weary, police spokeswoman. Police said the eyewitness identification by Josquin Jackson helped them make the arrest.

Mr. Jackson, shot three times, pretended to be dead before flagging someone down and asking to be taken to Erlanger hospital.

Fugitive investigators with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department and Chattanooga Police Department located Mr. Smith and arrested him without incident. He has been charged with felony murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of especially aggravated robbery and two counts of aggravated assault, Sgt. Weary said.

Mr. Brown was shot to death March 28. A member of the rap duo Pinney Woods, in which he went by the stage name Brikk, he was known by friends in Chattanooga as Lee Lee.

Mr. Smith is the cousin of Dexter Talley, who was the first suspect arrested. Alonza “Butch” Grace, also has been arrested.

Students arrested in Ooltewah fires

Two Ooltewah High School students were arrested about noon Thursday in connection with two small fires set at the school Wednesday.

After an investigation, two ninth-graders were arrested and booked on charges of aggravated arson, reckless endangerment and disrupting an assembly, said Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner.

The two juveniles reportedly started the fires Wednesday in two restrooms at opposite ends of the school shortly after 1 p.m.

Officer assaulted by robbery suspect

A Chattanooga police officer was assaulted by a robbery suspect Wednesday night.

Police responded to a robbery at the Conoco at 6800 Shallowford Road about 8:30 p.m. They were told that a man with a gun entered the store and demanded money, police spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary said. After taking $200, the man fled the store.

Later, patrol Officer John Tolson saw three suspicious people at 1800 Tuskegee Blvd. During an interview, one charged Officer Tolson, knocking him to the ground and fighting him, Sgt. Weary said.

The man, identified as Justin Smith, freed himself and fled.

Officers responding to Officer Tolson’s call for assistance secured the other two men and found Mr. Smith shortly thereafter.

Officer Tolson was treated and released from Erlanger hospital for cuts to his face and elbow.

Police said they found a gun that they believe was used in the Conoco robbery, linking Mr. Smith to the incident.

Mr. Smith and Travis Jackson were arrested in connection with Conoco incident.

Mr. Smith was booked on charges of aggravated robbery, theft under $500 and felonious possession of a firearm, police said, while Mr. Jackson was booked on a charge of criminal conspiracy.

Fight at store ends in arrests

Chattanooga police had a busy night at the Brainerd Wal-Mart shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Police responded to 490 Greenway View Drive after they received a call about an alleged shoplifter fighting store employees, police spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary said.

When police arrived, store personnel had Richard Harvard in custody. Mr. Harvard was taken to Erlanger hospital for medical treatment and a warrant was obtained for his arrest on a charge of theft under $500.

Later, police saw a woman run out of the store to a waiting car.

When approached, the driver tried to run over the officer, police said.

Police chased the vehicle, which was disabled when the driver, identified as Carol Barnes, lost control of it after a tire went flat, Sgt. Weary said.

Ms. Barnes was arrested and booked on charges of aggravated assault, theft under $500 and reckless endangerment, Sgt. Weary said.
