Old rivals win in 6-AAA

Old rivals Ooltewah and Soddy-Daisy are scheduled to battle again today in the winners-bracket final of the District 6-AAA high school softball tournament at Chattanooga State.

Ooltewah edged Central 2-1 on Tuesday when Morgan Mavity led off with a double and scored on a throwaway.

The Lady Trojans got a two-hitter from Alesha Buckner and defeated Red Bank 8-0.

Red Bank and Central are set to play an elimination game at 6 p.m. The Lady Owls (23-7) will face Soddy-Daisy (36-3-1) afterward.

Kristin Whitmire, whose single had advanced Mavity to third, and Taylor Baird were each 2-for-3 for the Lady Owls. Sara Walker and Shelby Willard had two each of the seven hits allowed by winning pitcher Stephanie Braz, who had seven strikeouts.

* District 5-AAA: At Walker Valley, Cleveland defeated Cumberland County 6-5, then beat regular-season champion Walker Valley 3-1.

Morgan Shamblin pitched a two-hitter and had an RBI during the Lady Raiders’ three-run seventh against the Lady Mustangs. Allison Simpson had a double and joined Hayley Melton and Kelly Walker with two RBIs apiece.

At Rhea County, the Lady Golden Eagles defeated Bradley Central 7-0 behind Jessie Freels’ no-hitter with 15 strikeouts, but McMinn County dropped them to the losers bracket with Brittany Rogers pitching a one-hitter.

Aubrey Keyser was 2-for-2 for the Lady Cherokees, who scored their runs in the bottom of the sixth. Chelsea Watson had two doubles and three RBIs in Rhea’s victory.

* District 5-A: At Tyner, Silverdale Baptist defeated David Brainerd 5-3 after cruising past Tennessee Temple 13-2 in five innings. David Brainerd beat Copper basin 15-3 in five innings in the other game.

Vanessa Silvers was the winning pitcher in Silverdale’s first game when she contributed a two-run double in a nine-run fourth. Her single tied the second game in the fourth before McCall Lasater’s single provided the go-ahead run. Kelsey Dishroon pitched a two-hitter and had two hits. Erica Carroll had hits in each game.

Katherine Knarr was 3-for-4 with an RBI in David Brainerd’s win and winning pitcher C.J. Nelson was one of three Lady Wildcats with two hits.

* District 5-AA: At Sweetwater, the Lady Wildcats coasted past Polk County 11-1 in six innings.

At Decatur, grounds were too wet for Boyd-Buchanan to play Meigs County. That game has been rescheduled for today at 6 p.m. with Polk County scheduled to play the loser afterward.
