When Danny Myrick and Bridgette Tatum were writing “She’s Country,” they knew not just any singer could pull off lyrics like “a party-all-nighter from South Carolina, and a bad mama jama from down in Alabama.” It had to be someone with the swagger, attitude and drawl to do it justice.

“They wrote it for me,” said Jason Aldean in a telephone interview. “It’s cool somebody was willing to write a song with us in mind. It was Bridgette’s first cut as a songwriter and the first No. 1 for both of them.”

Aldean brings all that attitude and Southern rock style to Memorial Auditorium on Thursday night when he headlines WUSY 101’s birthday bash.

“It’s always cool to do something with a station you know has supported you from the beginning, and US101 is one of those,” Aldean said.

With its sultry lyrics and pulsing bass line, “She’s Country” shot to No. 1 on the Billboard and iTunes charts. Aldean backed the song with a video montage of live shots of female fans at his concerts — just in case there was any doubt about who he was describing. After 25 weeks on the charts, “She’s Country” still hasn’t dropped below No. 3.

Fans may have noticed Aldean is wearing a vintage Alabama T-shirt in that video. It’s part of his tribute to the country group that influenced him as a teen, along with a cover of “My Home’s in Alabama” on his new CD, “Wide Open.”

“I was a big fan; they were my favorite group. They were like The Beatles for me growing up. I knew all their songs, went to see them in concert I don’t know how many times. It’s a tribute and a shoutout with respect to my idols.”

Aldean’s music earned the respect of Alabama lead singer Randy Owen enough that the vocalist joined Aldean on the cover.

“Having Randy come in and sing on my record was pretty special,” Aldean said.

His next single from “Wide Open” will be “Big Green Tractor.”

Aldean will be performing at LP Field during CMA Music Fest as well as hosting his own concert and fan club meet, The Concert for the Cure, which will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. He’ll open for Keith Urban for eight shows later in June among the 36 road dates he has scheduled through mid-September.

To pass the time on the road, the singer said he’s started Tweeting.

“I’m just starting to figure out the whole Twitter thing. I haven’t been ‘twittin’ a lot, or whatever it’s called. I go play golf, too. It kills three or four hours and gets me off the bus.”

His handicap? “A lot.”

Aldean said his fans, the Aldean Army, can expect to hear “a little bit of everything” Thursday night.

“We play my songs and play some rock. My goal is to give people a show and make sure they get their money’s worth.”
