MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — As far as the McCallie tennis team is concerned, it’s cookie time.
Banned from the chocolate chip cookies made for them prior to the state tournament, the Blue Tornado filled the requirements necessary for consumption by winning their fourth consecutive Division II-AA state title, defeating Knoxville Webb 4-3.
“We were going to eat them after last night’s match, but (senior) Taylor Rogers told us we couldn’t until after tomorrow,” McCallie coach Eric Voges said.
“Winning the 2 through 4 singles matches was huge for us,” Voges said. “We knew we had to have three singles wins to have a chance.”
The Blue Tornado came out strong, winning first sets in three matches. Thomas Fanjoy, Sawyer Voges and William Disterdick finished with wins in singles for the Blue Tornado. Disterdick’s 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) win over Reid Walling gave McCallie a 3-2 lead going into doubles, and Fanjoy and Voges teamed together to post an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles over Trey Hatcher and Brian Carman. A shot by Carman that went wide sealed the win for McCallie.
“I knew that I had to play conservatively and smart,” Disterdick said. “I didn’t want to let the crowd be a distraction, because I knew that me winning would be a turning point.”
The Spartans had defeated McCallie for the region championship.
“Since we had lost that match in the regular season, we didn’t have any pressure coming in today.”
It was a special win for Coach Voges, who watched his son Sawyer participate and celebrate the win. Only two seniors (Schlabach and Fanjoy) participated in last season’s win.
“It’s different with your son playing,” the coach said. “This year was big because we had to defeat two good teams (Memphis University School and Webb) for the title — in other years, we would only have to beat one good team. Each win has a nice feeling and it’s own special meaning, but for these seniors that have waited their chance, it’s nice to see them get a title.”
