Recent GPS graduate Jasmine Brown has decided to play volleyball for the University of Tennessee and will be signing her letter of intent soon, GPS coach Paul Brock said Monday evening.

The multisport star was a setter and hitter for the Bruisers and was voted the most valuable player in the Division II-AA state tournament last fall, when they repeated their TSSAA championship and wound up 52-8 for the season. She also made the all-tournament team in 2007.

Brown won the Division II girls’ triple jump and was third and fifth in the two hurdles events last Thursday at the state track and field meet. She was second in the pentathlon earlier in the week.

Middle Tennessee State and Memphis were among other NCAA Division I schools recruiting Brown for volleyball, Brock said.

“She’ll be playing for Rob Patrick, who helped win a national championship as an assistant coach at Stanford and took Tennessee to the Final Four a few years ago,” the GPS coach added. “She’s already got his summer workout schedule for her, and she’s excited about that.

“Jasmine is an incredibly talented natural athlete. She has speed and jumping ability, and she was the quarterback of our volleyball team,” Brock said. “And she is an outstanding student. She had close to a 4.0 grade point average.”

Brown compiled 1,186 assists, 617 digs, 418 kills, 111 blocks and 108 service aces in her senior season. She was a high school All-American as a junior and received honorable mention this past year.

All five seniors from the 2008 GPS volleyball team are set to continue athletic careers in college. Megan Givens and Whitney Hammond also signed with Tennessee but for softball, and Heather Parman signed to play volleyball at UT-Chattanooga. The fifth, Danna Myatt, will be playing for Bryan College.
