The membership rates were too great for Carol Bowers to pass up, so she and her husband decided to join the Lookout Mountain Golf Club. But neither of them played golf and Carol found it silly after three years to belong to a golf club and not play the game.
“I decided to take lessons with two of my friends,” she said. “They soon quit and I hung in there.”
Bowers continued playing with the support of friend and fellow member Reva Thomas.
“She took me under her wing when I first took up golf, and that was about six years ago,” Bowers said. “She was very encouraging and had this twinkle in her eye. She told me, ‘Practice, keep playing and you’ll get better.’”
Bowers said her scores vary but she has the goal of getting her handicap down to 15.
“One day it’s good; one day it’s not,” Bowers said. “Tiger (Woods) doesn’t always win. But I have improved.”
Thomas arrived early for their late-morning tee time Tuesday at Moccasin Bend and waited patiently for Bowers, who arrived 15 minutes late.
“I don’t think it will rain until about 3,” Thomas said. “I hope we get to play.”
If they didn’t, there’s always another day.
