Riding high off his recent smash No. 1 hit, country singer Jimmy Wayne launches Lake Winnepesaukah’s Jukebox Junction summer concert series Sunday.
“Our concert series this season is very dynamic and energetic,” said Talley Green, spokeswoman for Lake Winnie.
“We’re kicking off with Jimmy. He’s been climbing the charts with singles off his second album and puts on a great show. We wanted to start the season with great songs and great energy.”
The title track off Wayne’s new CD, “Do You Believe Me Now” notched the singer his first No. 1. Perhaps not coincidentally, the CD and single’s title mirrored the struggling success Wayne has had so far in the country genre and his determination to prove himself in the industry.
After signing with DreamWorks Records in 2001, Wayne had modest success with songs such as “I Love You This Much” and “Paper Angels” while waiting on a smash hit. After DreamWorks closed in 2005, Wayne moved to Big Machine Records, according to Internet sources. He released two singles under that label, one peaking at No. 50, the other never making it onto the charts.
Then in 2008, he transferred to Valory Music, a Big Machine subsidiary, releasing the title track from his second album. “Do You Believe Me Now” had mass appeal for its honesty in the lyrics, catchy melody and Wayne’s passion in telling a story to which every listener would relate.
“I Will,” the second release off “Do You Believe Me Now,” peaked at No. 18 and his third single from the CD, “I’ll Be That,” an uptempo number, debuted at No. 56 earlier this month.
Wayne said in a news release on his Web site that the “Do You Believe Me Now” CD has only two ballads on it, which is a change for him.
“I spent three years trying to find these songs that just really set me apart,” he said.
