The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golf team concluded its second round of the NCAA championship early this morning.
The Mocs closed with three bogeys and zero birdies at dawn and dropped to 16th place after the entire field posted second-round scores at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
UTC shot 13 over in the second round and stands at 21 over for the tournament. Coach Mark Guhne said last night he hoped the Mocs would finish strong this morning and get in the top 15, which would have meant a late morning start to the third round.
Instead, UTC will begin its final round of stroke play at 3 p.m. Only six teams had a worse score in the second round including the bottom four of 30 teams in the field.
The top eight teams will compete Friday in match play for a spot in the championship match on Saturday. The Mocs are seven strokes out of an eighth-place tie with Duke. But Alabama, Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Southern Cal also stand between Duke and UTC.
