Boyd-Buchanan has hired former Lee University standout Cole Rose as boys’ basketball coach and Amber Nolen as volleyball coach.
Rose succeeds Jeff Brown, who moved to a full-time minister’s job in Kingsport, and Nolen takes over for Kristi Lenoir, who is moving to the new East Hamilton school.
“Cole is a young guy, 25 or 26, and comes to us from a school in Dublin, Ga., that is similar to Boyd-Buchanan,” Boyd-Buchanan athletic director Steve Robbins said.
Nolen played volleyball and then worked as a graduate assistant at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D. Her hiring is one of a handful of changes among Chattanooga-area high school volleyball coaches. Central has hired Victor Rodriguez and David Brainerd has hired Ashley Scott.
Also, LeeAnne Shurette has been named softball coach at Central, and former Red Bank standout Tyler Rich will be joining his alma mater’s football staff as an assistant to Tim Daniels.
Brown’s departure at Boyd-Buchanan also leaves the school without a girls’ basketball coach. His wife, Susie, filled that position, which has yet to be filled.
Rose attended Battle Ground Academy before spending the next two years as a player at Freed-Hardeman. He transferred to Belmont University for a year and then finished his career at Lee. The Flames went 33-2 in his final season.
“The folks at Lee rave about him,” Robbins said.
According to Lee University sports information director George Starr, Rose averaged about 10 points and five rebounds per game.
“He was a top defender on our teams for two straight years and always drew the assignment of guarding the opponents’ best player, whether it was a guard or a forward,” Starr said. “He was a team leader and he gave tremendous energy to the team.”
Lee coach Tommy Brown, a former Boyd-Buchanan star, gave Rose a ringing endorsement.
“He was tough, a great leader,” Brown said. “He finished up here as a graduate student and spoke at graduation. He was an incredible kid to coach.”
Nolen played one year at Covenant and then decided to finish at Black Hills. She was an assistant coach there for a year before coaching at Spearfish High School. She came recently to Chattanooga with her husband Nicholas, an emergency medical technician.
“My sister (Heather Smith) lives here and has a new child. I wanted to come and be a real aunt,” Nolen said.
While she will be a non-faculty coach, Nolen is hoping to work with Boyd-Buchanan’s drama program, which at this time is an extracurricular activity. She has degrees in theater and speech.
Rodriguez, who has taught at Central for five years, was an assistant under Steve Lewis a couple of years ago and most recently has been an assistant soccer coach. As volleyball coach he succeeds Lana O’Banion, who recently moved to Nashville.
Lewis is the Central girls’ track coach. Coach of the Pounders’ boys’ track program will be Gary Bloodsaw, who has coached football and track at Brown Middle for several years.
Scott is a former Ringgold player and helped the Lady Tigers to top-four state finishes three times. She went from there to Tennessee Tech on a volleyball scholarship and has coached the North Georgia Volleyball Club Aces the past three years.
Shurette, a former Ooltewah and Tennessee Tech star as LeeAnne Mongar, was Central’s softball assistant last year but moves up to replace Rick May, who plans to continue as the girls’ basketball coach.
Rich, who has spent the last two seasons at East Ridge, will be part of a revamped staff at Red Bank, where he’ll be coaching linebackers. The Lions also added a couple of coaches who have most recently been at Brainerd: Tyrus Ward and Mario Jefferson. Ward will be working with defensive backs and Jefferson with the defensive line.
Drew Lyness is coming from Soddy-Daisy, and Daniels said he will serve as team chaplain and help on the field when he can.
