Magee: With tradition on its side, Chattanooga deserves FCS title game

In college sports, "tradition" has a special meaning that can transcend all else.

As the NCAA's Men's College World Series has grown in popularity, for instance, the annual event's host city, Omaha, Neb., has become integral to its lore.

"Headed to Omaha" is a popular battle cry.

That same sense of tradition is why the NCAA should leave the Football Championship Subdivision national title game in Chattanooga.

Arguably, no setting is better. The city is colorful and easily accessible, with an outstanding playing facility that is more suited now for big games than ever, thanks to upgrades.

The championship game has been held here since 1997. In that time, the community has developed a sense of pride associated with the annual December ritual.

The NCAA probably was wise in seeking competing bids for the FCS championship game for the 2010 season and beyond. Competition can prompt those vying for the bid to strengthen their hand.

The only reasonable question regarding Chattanooga's bid, in competition with at least four other cities, involves money. Officials here have worked hard to put their best bid forward but don't know how much of a financial guarantee other cities are promising the NCAA.

No matter what they are offering, though, tradition is vital. Overall, the experience in Chattanooga has been excellent for fans, teams, the community and the NCAA.

And when improvements have been needed, they've been made. The sodden field that clumped up in 2004 has been replaced with artificial turf. The stadium's aged sound system has been updated.

What arguably matters most is that fans and teams for years have used the phrase "Road to Chattanooga."

Let's hope the NCAA understands the value of this growing tradition.
