A good 48 hours lapsed before University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golf coach Mark Guhne could muster smile after a terrible Tuesday.
His Mocs played their most disappointing round of the fall season in the Aldila Scenic City Invitational which dropped them from a tie for first to a disappointing seventh-place finish in the rain. Their finish in the middle of the pack dropped UTC from No. 18 to No. 24 in the GolfWeek rankings.
“They know they’re a better team than that and they’ve worked to fix it,” Guhne said. “The common thread that came out of playing in the rain is that we have to tough it out and I don’t think the boys have ever been mentally prepared to play in the rain.
“I think it was a lack of mental preparation.”
UTC can erase those negative memories today and Tuesday when they finish their fall season in the Hummingbird Intercollegiate which is hosted by Western Carolina at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
Freshman Simon Forsslund beat senior J.T. Clendenin and freshman Alex Ratliff for the fifth spot in the lineup in a two-day qualifier. He will join Stephan Jaeger, Fredrik Qvicker, Derek Rende and Steven Fox in the starting lineup. Clendenin, Ratliff and Tripp Harris will participate as individuals.
“I think that it’s very important that we’ve got another chance to establish ourselves and prove that we’re one of the better teams in the country,” “We’ve got a chance to right some wrongs heading into the offseason.”
