Chattanooga Christian and Christ Presbyterian Academy played to a scoreless tie in the first half of their Class A/AA quarterfinal match at Chattanooga Christian.
Then came the second half.
The second-ranked Lady Lions came out extremely aggressive in the second half and scored 32 seconds in on a Victoria Anderson header. They added a goal by Dabney Wilson later and went on to a 2-0 victory over fourth-ranked CCS.
CPA will play Christian Academy of Knoxville in one of today's semifinals at CCS at 7 p.m. CAK was a 5-1 winner over Madison. Notre Dame will face Greeneville in the other semifinal at 4:30. Saturday's final will be at GPS.
The difference at the half for CPA might have been an adjustment it made defensively.
"We figured out early on that they played a very direct style," CPA coach Brandy Gagliano said. "They like to serve the long ball to the forwards quickly, and our backs picked up on that and were able to pick off a lot of long passes.
"We also have a lot of pace in the back, so we were able to keep up with their fast players up front."
CPA controlled a majority of the possession in the second half, and seemed a little crisper in their attacks against CCS.
"Those things don't typically happen," CCS coach Cal Sneller said. "Our defense plays so well, but they were a very potent opponent -- CPA is very aggressive going after the ball. We were told that they go in spurts; that they were a very spurty team that goes all of a sudden, and they attacked us with seven or eight players at a time and we had a hard time adjusting to those huge numbers, but both of their goals came off long services in."
That attack led to CPA's first goal. The ball was served in from the right side, and bounced in the box, where an oncoming Anderson headed it over the outstretched hands of Lady Charger keeper Taylor Thurman for a one-goal advantage.
The second goal came off a Savannah Moore corner. The ball bounced around the box, when Wilson got a foot on it and found a small crease for a goal.
CCS's best chance to score came on a service from about 40 yards out. Tiffany Sullivan got a head on the ball, which nearly crossed the line before being cleared out by CPA's Chelsae Parris.
"The girls had a great year," Sneller said. "They improved on so many things -- more than what they expected to be able to do.
"They can't hang their heads; they lost to a very good team."
* Greeneville 2, Page 0: At CCS, Becca Willett and Taylor Leng had goals for Greeneville (18-5-1), which used a strong defensive effort to stop Page's Kate Maguigan and Kelsey Wilkes, who combined for more than 70 goals during the season.
"For the first time down here and to play the first game of the tournament, the girls were nervous," Greeneville coach John Eiskamp said. "We got the first goal and it gave us energy, and to get that second goal was the deciding factor."
* CAK 5, Madison 1: At CCS, the Lady Warriors scored their goals in the first half of the Class A/AA quarterfinal. Brittany Hoffman and Kayce Campbell scored the first two goals, Mary Thompson made the next two and assisted the last one.
Brittany and Paige Hoffman each ended up with a goal and an assist for CAK (22-0-1). Kiah Allen also had an assist.
Abby Bailey scored off Amber Elmore's assist in the second half for Madison.
