Paschall: Gamecocks seek a new November

They say it's what you do in November, and that unfortunately goes for South Carolina, too.

The Gamecocks are 13-36 in the calendar's 11th month since joining the SEC football ranks in 1992. Their annual close of Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida and Clemson may be the toughest nationally, so wouldn't it make sense to work a Charleston Southern in there somewhere?

"We have talked about it, and it would be helpful if we could do that," South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Wednesday. "As far as the point spread, for whatever that's worth, we are underdogs these last four. We weren't last year. We were actually favored over Tennessee and Arkansas and were fortunate enough to beat them, but this is a new year."

South Carolina scheduled MTSU as its 11th game in 2006 and has Troy as its 11th game next year. The Gamecocks defeated the Blue Raiders 52-7 in '06 before winning 31-28 at Clemson, which is their lone win over the Tigers under Spurrier.

"We're happy to be 6-3 right now," he said. "We've got a whole bunch of freshmen playing, and we're not going to put pressure on those guys. We believe our big-win teams are a year or two down the road."

Pasquali's Pix:

South Carolina at Arkansas: Who had Ryan Mallett and Stephen Garcia as the SEC's total offense leaders heading into this one? Razorbacks 33, Gamecocks 24.

Tennessee Tech at Georgia: Rumor has it the Bulldogs will incorporate purple into their helmets this week. Oh wait, that's Tennessee Tech. Bulldogs 38, Golden Eagles 15.

Furman at Auburn: Gene Chizik's current team is 6-3, and his former team (Iowa State) is an even-more-surprising 5-4. Tigers 30, Paladins 13.

UTC at Appalachian State: Do the amazing Mocs get their sixth win this week, or do they save it for Bama? Mountaineers 38, Mocs 14.

LSU at Alabama: The Crimson Tide last beat LSU at Bryant-Denny Stadium in 1999, when Mike DuBose got the better of Gerry DiNardo. Tide 23, Tigers 16.

Wake Forest at Georgia Tech: Paul Johnson's Yellow Jackets are all alone now when it comes to carrying the ACC banner. Jackets 31, Demon Deacons 17.

Memphis at Tennessee: This has to rank among the top 200 or 300 in-state rivalries in college football. Vols 38, Tigers 3.

Vanderbilt at Florida: Gators coach Urban Meyer and senior linebacker Brandon Spikes have agreed that Spikes now will sit the entire win. Gators 41, Commodores 10.
