ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia redshirt sophomore quarterback Logan Gray threw his first collegiate touchdown pass last Saturday against Florida.

"As a quarterback, you always want to have a quick memory, good or bad, because it's going to be a new play or a new series or a new game," Gray said. "Obviously that's not what I wanted to happen or what we wanted to happen, but there is nothing I can do about it now except try to move on and get ready for this week."

Gray replaced starting quarterback Joe Cox with 7:42 remaining and the Gators leading 34-17. He was sacked by A.J. Jones on first down at Georgia's 7-yard line, and a delay-of-game penalty moved the Bulldogs to their 4.

Then came the interception by Spikes, who returned Gray's miscue 5 yards to cap the scoring at 41-17.

"We ran a play-action pass at a time where they probably didn't care a whole lot about play-action, so a linebacker that would probably get close to the line of scrimmage wasn't too concerned about the run," coach Mark Richt said. "Logan's got a vision of the receiver that he's throwing to and he just kind of buzzed it in. Does he need to expand his vision on that? Probably, yes. But that play certainly was one that is much more effective on first-and-10 when the game is close."

Richt does not believe the interception will linger in Gray's development, and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo told the 6-foot-2, 192-pounder from Columbia, Mo., that the pick wouldn't be held against him. Before Gray could say thanks, he was promised a series this week against Tennessee Tech.

A series when the game still is in doubt.

"It will probably be in the first half, but we haven't nailed down precisely what series it's going to be," Bobo said. "We'll get him in there and see if we can't change up some things."

Gray was Rivals.com's No. 10 dual-threat quarterback in the 2007 signing class, trailing the likes of Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor, Southern Cal's Aaron Corp, South Carolina's Stephen Garcia, Auburn's Kodi Burns and Georgia Tech's Josh Nesbitt. He redshirted in '07 and appeared in six games last season as a punt returner but only two as a quarterback, attempting no passes and rushing twice for 21 yards.

His totals at quarterback so far this season include four carries for 3 yards and one completion in seven attempts for 6 yards.

"I'm excited to hopefully get in a game at a time where it's still in hand," he said. "At Tennessee, I got in during the fourth quarter when they had the game in control, and it was the same last week. I've been in several games for a play here and a play there, but that can be tough for a quarterback because you don't have any rhythm.

"Hopefully, I'll be able to go in there and make some plays, and we'll see what happens."

Following Wednesday's practice, Richt announced that redshirt sophomore defensive end Neland Ball has been medically disqualified due to a chronic back injury. ... Freshman receiver Rantavious Wooten will start Saturday in the absence of A.J. Green (bruised lung), with redshirt freshman defensive end Cornelius Washington likely getting the nod for Justin Houston (elbow). ... Junior linebacker Rennie Curran has been named among the 16 semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given annually to the nation's top defensive player. ... Tennessee Tech starting defensive end Charlie Seivers is the son of former Tennessee receiver Larry Seivers.
