Coaches are well-known for being happy with wins while not being pleased with their teams' performances.
In that tradition, Baylor girls' soccer coach Jimmy Weekley wasn't ecstatic Thursday after his top-ranked Lady Red Raiders defeated Pope John Paul II 2-1 to advance to the Division II-AA state final.
The Lady Red Raiders will face St. Agnes (16-0-4), a 3-1 winner over defending state champion Father Ryan, in today's final at 2:30 p.m. at GPS.
"I am excited for our girls," Weekley said. "They've worked hard to get to this point. We're going to have to be focused tomorrow and play our best game of the year to win."
Baylor (17-0-1) outshot the Lady Knights 7-3 and got first-half goals from Peyton Thomas and Mary Ellen Williams, but Weekley was not pleased with the overall performance of his girls. They had to hold on after a second-half goal by the Lady Knights (10-5-5).
"I thought it was a very frantic game, and there wasn't a lot of composure on our part," Weekley said. "I was disappointed we didn't play well -- we started to slip into some bad habits in the second half -- but we got the result we wanted and we're where we need to be."
Thomas got the Lady Red Raiders on the board six minutes in when she headed in a Carissa Sanchez corner kick. With less than five minutes to go in the first half, Williams pushed the lead to 2-0 when she kept attacking downfield. The ball glanced off her shinguard twice and into the goal.
"That lead (2-0) is the worst to have," Weekley said. "We started to sit back on our heels, and it seemed like for most of the second half we were playing not to lose."
Weekley was pleased with the defensive efforts of Alex Cannon, Hannah Edmonds, Paige Elliott and Teni Butler. Sarah Galvin had the Lady Knights' goal, firing a shot that slipped under Katherine Rodgers' fingertips.
"Their No. 20 (sophomore Cailin Harris) is dangerous," Weekley said. "The defense had to be aware of where she was at all times, but the backs did a good job of covering and keeping their shape.
"We had one breakdown and they scored off it."
