Within a four-second span, the Baylor girls' soccer team's elation turned into deflation.

Down 1-0, a McKenzie Thomas goal was waved off late in the second half of the Lady Red Raiders' Division II-AA state championship game against St. Agnes. The official ruled that Thomas was offside on the play, and the Lady Stars celebrated their second championship in the last four seasons with a 1-0 victory at Girls Preparatory School.

"I would love to see the tape," Weekley said. "I thought she (Thomas) passed the last girl when the ball was in the air, but we were so far away that it's hard to see it. It would have been a game-changer; you see the ball go in, but then you see the flag go up and it deflates you."

St. Agnes coach Bobby Ireland saw the goal first.

"I thought she was offsides on the play, but I was more intense watching her," he said. "Then I saw the flag, and my heart went back to the right place in my chest."

Camilla Buoni scored at the 25:44 mark of the first half. Tournament most valuable player Caroline Capocaccia served a long ball from midfield, and Buoni was there to flick a header over Baylor keeper Katherine Rodgers.

"I took the free kick and decided to hit it long," Capocaccia said. "Camilla did a great job of getting on it.

"It was a beautiful goal and the most successful free kick of the season."

St. Agnes (17-0-4) played extremely physically and acquired 13 fouls but also did a good job of neutralizing Thomas, who led Baylor with 18 goals this season. The Baylor sophomore usually had to work to get past Capocaccia only to find 6-footer Aja Jenkins waiting.

Baylor finished with only four shots on goal, but 10 attempts were deflected by St. Agnes defenders.

"Those girls in the back have been strong all year," Ireland said. "That's part of what's made us so good. The other girls have the confidence to move forward because of the 'twin towers' back there.

"Today they showed why we are who we are."

Baylor, which finished 17-1-1 for the second year in a row, loses starter Carissa Sanchez and fellow senior Mary Stagmaier but returns the rest of the team.

"I think it was tough for us to get our legs back from last night," Weekley said, referring to Baylor's 2-1 victory over Pope John Paul II. "St. Agnes is a good team. Se didn't play our best, but I'm proud of the season we had. I like the effort today, but our legs weren't there.

"We kept battling and played a lot of young girls, so I hope to be back here next year."

Said Ireland: "This is sweet, really sweet. It was a tough game but a great game. We were third in our region last year and brought in a lot of new players, but this is amazing. The girls worked hard all year long and earned this."
