Bruisers bounce BGA, 3-0

GPS hosted and defeated Battle Ground Academy 3-0 in a first-round match Saturday in the Division II-AA state high school volleyball tournament.

The Bruisers are 21-25 and will play at Father Ryan, the top-seeded team from the East/Middle Region, this Saturday. The winner advances to the semifinals in Murfreesboro.

"Our girls did a super job of playing today," GPS coach Paul Brock said. "They have been working hard and pushing to peak at this time of year."

Katie Dorris had a team-high nine kills for the Bruisers, while all-region honoree Tory Kemp added six kills, 10 assists and three blocks.

* Georgia Class AAA: At Ringgold, the host Lady Generals defeated Kendrick 3-0 in an opening-round match in the state tournament. Heritage (27-7) will play at Woodward Academy on Tuesday in the second round.

Hannah Cecil paced the hitting for the Lady Generals with seven kills. Kelsey Blackwell led with 15 assists and Amber Wann had 11 digs.

* Georgia Class A: At Chickamauga, Gordon Lee fell 3-2 to Calvary Day in their first-round state tournament match.

Alli O'Neal had 14 kills and 25 digs for the Lady Trojans, who finished their year 28-4.

Cleveland wins 10-0

Cleveland, McMinn County and Ooltewah all had District 5-AAA girls' soccer quarterfinal wins Saturday. Cleveland blasted Walker Valley 10-0, while Ooltewah's Lady Owls beat Bradley Central 4-1.

The Lady Owls scored two goals in each half. Claire Ingalls had two for Ooltewah (7-5-3), which will play Tuesday at 7 p.m. at district top seed and ninth-ranked Soddy-Daisy.

Cleveland's Hannah Ellis had three goals and an assist, while Emily Jones added two goals and two assists for the Lady Raiders (11-5-2), who face McMinn County at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cleveland soccer complex. McMinn beat Rhea County 11-0 Saturday. The third-seeded Lady Cherokees got five goals from freshman Haley Ward, who tied the school's single-season record of 25.

* District 6-A/AA: East Ridge advanced in the District 6-A/AA soccer tournament with a 4-1 victory over Central. The Lady Pioneers (6-7-1) were down a goal in the final seconds, but Jessica Gray scored on a Brooke Gann cross with four seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. Gann, Paige Atterton and Sage Vandergriff added overtime goals.

The Lady Pioneers will play at top-seeded Arts & Sciences in a semifinal match Tuesday at 7.

* District 5-A/AA: Sweetwater defeated Sequoyah 4-0 in the first round of the district tournament. Leslie Stevens had two goals and Kellie Collins two assists for the Lady Wildcats (10-6-1), who will face McMinn Central Tuesday at 5.
