Braly: I learned something I wish I never knew

I don’t know why, but’s it’s always bothered me that I don’t know Aunt Jemima’s last name. Or what about Mrs. Smith who makes such good pies? Then there’s Hungry Jack, Mrs. Paul, Orange Julius, Nathan of hot dog fame. It’s these little questions that keep a food editor awake at night. I know, you don’t have to tell me. Get a life.

However, I can finally write one off my list. Mrs. Butterworth’s name has been revealed. After 40 years, her first name has become public — Joy. But there’s something strange now. Every time I look at a bottle of the famous syrup, Joy just doesn’t seem to fit. Makes me think of dishwashing liquid. Think I’ll stick with Mrs. Butterworth. Wish I’d never found out.
