David Jo Baggett

David Josephine Baggett, 63, of Soddy-Daisy, ended her walk through life at home with her family by her side on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009.

David Jo had been a longtime resident of Jefferson County, Ala., before relocating to Tennessee.

David Jo was a former member of CWA Local 3902 and a longtime member of Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW, Kelly Ingram Post 668 and the DAV Auxiliary in Birmingham, Ala. During her last years, “Granny Jo” (as she was fondly known) dedicated most of her time to volunteering at Gann Middle Valley Elementary School and substitute teaching at numerous Chattanooga area schools. She loved helping the minds of children grow.

She is survived by her husband, Fred A. Baggett; and children, Juanita (Barry) Braddock, of Fultondale, Ala., and Howard L. (Tracey) McConnell Jr., of Hixson; stepchildren, Holly G. (Fred) Didden, John Messina and William Jones; grandchildren, Destini and Faith McConnell, Coleman Braddock, Jennifer Messina, Alexandra Urban, and Sergi Jones; great-grandchildren, Jake Messina; sister, Olyve Marie Furgason; and a host of close family and friends.

Services will be held at noon CDT on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel, with visitation Monday night from 5:30-8 p.m. CDT.

In lieu of flowers, “Granny Jo” has asked that contributions be made to Gann Middle Valley Elementary School Library Fund at 1609 Thrasher Pike, Hixson, TN 37343.

Her last wish was to be able to provide quality educational reading material to grow and expand the minds of the children of the future she would never meet.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Memorial Hospital Hospice wing, and the staff of Hospice of Chattanooga for all the caring support they have provided over the last few months.

Bill Bates

Billy J. “Bill” Bates, 67, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, in a local hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was a selfless, gentle and devoted family man who attended Grace Church of the Nazarene and served in several capacities of ministry. He was currently teaching a Sunday school class. His hobbies included fishing and coaching his daughter and son in softball and baseball, respectively. He retired from Combustion Engineering, TVA and Alstom Power. He served with the Alabama National Guard.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Della Bates.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Bates, of Chattanooga; daughter, Robin (Gary) Priest, of Signal Mountain; son, Benjamin Bates, of Knoxville (fiancée, Maggie Rockwell); brother, J.W. (Deane) Bates, of LaFayette, Ga.; sister, Merlene (Marvin) Harris, of Henagar, Ala.; grandchildren, Thomas and Meg Priest; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today, Oct. 25, 2009, at Grace Church of the Nazarene with Pastors Matt Hastings, Cecil Wells Jr. and Minister Greg Nance officiating.

Interment will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Visitation will be at North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home from noon until 1:30 p.m. today.

Philip Boyd

Philip Lewis Boyd, 62, son of the late Mae Boyd and Clyde L Boyd, died on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, in the Coronary Care Unit at Kennestone Hospital in Kennesaw, Ga., after a prolonged illness.

Philip was born and raised in Hixson and graduated from Notre Dame High School and Chattanooga State Technical Community College.

He was employed by the Roper Corp. in Chattanooga, LifeCare in Cleveland, Tenn., Ceridian Benefits in St. Petersburg, Fla., and most recently by Aaron Rents in the corporate offices in Kennesaw. He was a senior programmer/business analyst with a specialty in programming Clipper.

Philip is survived by his wife of 35 years, Vicki Smith-Boyd; son, Michael Boyd; daughter-in-law, Alison Cox Boyd; his granddaughters, Bailey Davis Boyd and Shelby Hamilton; and sisters, Linda Sticher and Brenda Thompson.

A memorial dinner is being held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 25 2009, at Harrison Ruritan Club, 5637 Highway 58, in Harrison. All friends and family are encouraged to attend.

Dale Carver

Dale Louis Carver, 61, of Chattanooga, died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at his residence.

He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and was retired from Olan Mills with over 20 years of service. He recently was employed by Brown Printing Co. of Dalton, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Haynes Carver.

Surviving relatives are wife, Wanda Faye Millard Carver; mother, Chris Inez Carver, of Chattanooga; sons, Mark David Sims, of Chattanooga, and Thomas Brian Sims, of Lawrence, Mass.; half brother, Jeffery Carver; sister, Cathy Carver; sisters-in-law, Arquilla Holder, of Nashville, and Deborah Higdon, of Sale Creek; special friend, Liz Hester, of Chattanooga; and caregiver, Vanessa Harris.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Thomas Cureton

Thomas Ralph Cureton, 60, of Chattanooga, passed away at his home on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009.

Mr. Cureton was recently retired from Chattanooga Bakery. He was an avid member of the Chattanooga Radio Control Club, where he flew radio-controlled aircraft.

He served as a private in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He supported charities such as Habitat for Humanity, the ASPCA and the Chattanooga Community Kitchen,

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Wilbanks; stepfather, Howard Wilbanks; father, William Cureton.

He is survived by his wife, Paula Cureton, of Chattanooga; son, Thomas (Sarah) L. Cureton, of Bristow, Va.; daughters, Jennifer (Gerald) Turner, of Marietta, Ga., Dominique Justice, of Ringgold, Ga.; stepmother, Erika Cureton, of Jasper, Tenn.; brothers, James D. (Faye) Cureton, of Chattanooga, and Brian Douglas, of Newton, Ala.; four grandchildren; beloved pets, Janie and Jax, and many friends, co-workers and neighbors.

Funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, graveside in Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Genevieve DeHoog officiating.

Interment will follow with military honors.

Pallbearers will be Thomas L. Cureton, Gerald Turner, Matt Combs, Billy Kile, Joe Meadows and Scott Goodwin.

Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Chattanooga Radio Control Club.

Blanche Fox

Blanche Henderson Fox, 96, former longtime resident of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at Arbor Terrace, an assisted living facility in Asheville, N.C.

After attending Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens, Tenn., Mrs. Fox began her career in Knoxville. In 1934, she moved to Chattanooga to work for the First National Bank Receivership. She met her future husband, Richard Fox, in 1934, and they were married in 1938. While raising a family, she was an active member of a garden club, a book club and did volunteer work.

She served as an officer on the board of directors of the Florence Crittenton Home and later worked for several years as a member of the staff. After retiring, Mrs. Fox did volunteer work at the Hunter Art Gallery.

In 1979, she joined the Nancy Ward Chapter of the DAR, where in 1980, she was elected treasurer. Mrs. Fox was a member of St. Mary’s Chapter at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. An avid reader and gardener, she also enjoyed visits with her children and traveling in North America and Europe. She lived with a sense of style and grace.

Mrs. Fox was preceded in death by her husband, G. Richard Fox, in 1974. She was the daughter of Otha Ray Henderson and Lida Denton Henderson of Cohutta, Ga.; and had two brothers, Coy Henderson, of Cohutta, and Denton Henderson, of Chattanooga.

Mrs. Fox is survived by her son, George R. Fox and wife, Juanita, of Fletcher, N.C.; and her daughter, Charlotte F. Fox, and friend, Jean Roberts, of Atlanta and Arden, N.C.; a grandson, Ansley R. Fox, and wife, Krista; and two great-granddaughters, Megan and Hannah Fox, of Fletcher, N.C.; stepgranddaughter, Jerrie Winkler and husband, Mark, of Waxhaw, N.C.; two step-great-grandchildren, Brandee and Joseph Winkler.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Interment in Forest Hills Cemetery.

Earline Goza

Earline Goza, 80, of Hixson, passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, in Huntsville, Ala.

She was an employee of DuPont Chemical Co. for over 35 years and was a member of Tiftonia Holiness Church for 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. Jim and Sophia Goza; sister, Edna Brown; brothers, Hugh, Era and Arlyn Goza.

Survivors include her sister, Ella Mae Hatfield, of Huntsville; 15 nieces and nephews; a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services are 1 p.m. today at Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel, with the Rev. Billy Parker and the Rev. Troy Lawson officiating.

Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Susan Hammond

Susan Gentry Hammond, 59, of East Ridge, passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at her home.

She had a BSN, RN degree and had worked at Moccasin Bend Mental Health Hospital.

Survivors include three children, Betsy (Brian) Johnson, Michael (Chasity) Burchfield and Wendy (Chris) Spear; five grandchildren, Sydney and Ethan Johnson, Zachary and Kobe Burchfield and Hannah Spear; father, William Walter Gentry II; siblings, Howard Ihrig, Meg Gentry, Kim Conner, Chris Gentry and Scott Gentry; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. Ronnie Mitchell officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Joyce Helming

Sandra Joyce Stewart Helming, 51, of East Ridge, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009.

A Florida native, she had lived here for seven years and was an employee of First Volunteer Bank.

Joyce was preceded in death by her father, Odell Ray Stewart.

Surviving are her mother, Dina Stewart, of Ashland, Ky.; brother, Odell Ray Stewart Jr., of Birchwood; sisters, Denise Smith, of Wasilla, Alaska, and Lisa Verold, of Chattanooga.

A private family memorial service will be held.

Joyce has been cremated and her cremains will be scattered in Alaska.

Beulah Irwin

Beulah Hazel Irwin, widow of the Rev. George Miller Irwin, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, in Chatsworth, Ga.

A native of Parkridge, Ill., she was a daughter of the late William and Myrtle Ramey Love.

She had been a longtime resident of St. Elmo and was a member of Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Steve Irwin, of Dalton, Ga.; daughter, Judy Williams, of Medford, N.J.; brother, the Rev. Bruce Love, of Wheaton, Ill.; sister, Jean York, of New Hampshire; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Love officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to WMBW Radio in Chattanooga.

Helen Martin

Helen Stovall Martin, 93, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009.

Helen was born in Memphis and had lived in Chattanooga for 66 years. She was an active member of Brainerd United Methodist Church, the Friendship Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Women and other actives at the church. Helen was an avid golfer, loved to travel and volunteered at Memorial Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Hill Martin; and a son, Ralph Stovall Martin.

Helen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bill Navel; daughter-in-law and her husband, Karen and David Flitcroft; grandchildren, Candace (Daniel) Shore, Leslie (Mark) Wiens, Meredith (Jay) A’Hern, Jay (Betsy) Navel, Lori (John) Mathews and Dr. David (Dr. Jamie) Navel; great grandchildren, Sarah and Davis Shore, Katrina and Kirsten Wiens, Michael and Emily Navel and Cami Mathews.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday at the East Chapel.

Rhonda Miller

Rhonda Lillard Miller, 48, formerly of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, in Springfield, Ga.

She attended Central High School of Chattanooga.

She was co-owner of Randy and Rhonda’s Automotive Center in Rincon, Ga., and was a member of Rincon Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Doris Mitchell; and sister, Linda Lillard.

Survivors include her husband, Randal Miller; son, Jeremy Allmond (Haley); daughters, Meranda Allmond and Linda Oglesby (Nathan); six grandchildren; father and stepmother, William and Helen Lillard, of Ooltewah; sisters, Sheila Helms and Bobbie Lillard, of Summerville, Ga., and Shannon (Charlie) Pope, of Menlo, Ga.

Jim Monroe

James Newton Monroe III, 65, of Ooltewah, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009.

Mr. Monroe was a lifelong resident of Ooltewah and was retired from the Hamilton County School System, where he served as assistant superintendent, and was a member of the Hamilton County Board of Education.

Jim was a member of Savannah Bay Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam, where he received the Purple Heart. He was the former president of the McDonald Cemetery Association. Jim’s vision, along with the developers Greg Vital and Franklin Farrow, made available the Greenbriar Cove Development, the former Monroe Farm.

Survivors include his wife, Denise Monroe; two daughters, Lorri (Greg) Garrett, Ooltewah, Amanda Monroe, Nashville; sister, Patricia (Bill) Riley, Ooltewah; three grandchildren, Zackary Garrett, Ooltewah, Baby Jai and Elijah Monroe, both of Nashville.

A private celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date.

Paul Myers

Paul B. Myers, 87, of Hixson, passed away on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, of congestive heart failure.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Griggs Myers; parents, Harold Chapin and Laura Wright Myers; and three of his older brothers, Willie, John and Loyd Myers.

Paul was born in Cookeville, Tenn., on July 7, 1922. In 1928, the Myers family moved to Nashville and resided at several addresses in East Nashville, finally residing on Eastside Avenue. He was a 1941 graduate of East Nashville High School. In 1942, he married Irene Griggs of Nashville, and he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. During WWII, he served as a radio operator in both the Philippines and New Guinea. Returning from military service in 1946, he lived in Donelson, a suburb of Nashville. He was employed by the Avco Corp. of Nashville for approximately 15 years.

In 1962, he accepted the position as manager of quality control for the Modern Maid Corp. of Chattanooga and he took up residence in East Ridge. When the Modern Maid plant closed, he retired and he and his wife, Irene, moved to Ten Mile, Tenn., where he built a house on Watts Bar Lake. After his wife, Irene died in 1992, he continued to live in Ten Mile.

In 2003, he returned to the East Nashville family home to care for his elder brother who was in poor health. In 2006, he returned to live in Chattanooga close to his son and sister. Paul and his wife were avid fishermen and he was a golfer. After his wife died, he gave up fishing and concentrated on playing golf. He was a member of Lakeside Golf Club in Kingston, Tenn.

He is survived by his son, Paul Terry Myers and wife, Joyce, of Hixson; grandson, Gregory Bryan Myers, of Raleigh, N.C.; granddaughter, Meredith Myers Caudle and husband, Ken, of Orlando, Fla.; sister, Sibbie Lee Vernon, of Hixson; brother, Marion (Marjorie) Myers, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. CDT Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at Algood Chapel, 124 First Ave., Algood, Tenn., by Bruce Vernon, with visitation from 1-2 p.m. CDT.

Daryl Norris

Daryl Elizabeth Patterson Norris, of Chattanooga, passed away on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, following a brief illness.

She was raised in Chattanooga with her four siblings and attended Central High School. In July 1942 she married the great love of her life, Dan A. Norris, a navigator in the U.S. Air Force. Over the next 20 years they moved frequently, and after his retirement from the military in 1962 they returned to civilian life in Chattanooga. He passed away in late October 1999 after 57 years of marriage — almost 10 years to the day before they were reunited in Heaven.

She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be remembered for her warmth and her ever-present smile. She was a devoted Christian and was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church in Woodmore before joining Brainerd Baptist Church 20 years ago where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan A. Norris; her parents, W. L. Patterson Sr. and Hattie Mae Hall Patterson; and her sister, Geneva Patterson Stonecipher.

She is survived by her two loving children, Donna Norris (Lynn) Haddock, of Chattanooga and Dan A. Norris II, of Atlanta; her brothers, Leon (Evelyn) Patterson, of Nashville and W.L. (Maxine) Patterson Jr., of Huntsville, Ala.; her sister, Lily Irene Patterson, of Chattanooga; her three beloved grandchildren, Jody Haddock, M.D., and Jennifer Haddock, both of Chattanooga, and Dan A. Norris III, of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews; and very dear friends, Cullen and Carolyn Davis and Vivian Cash.

Daryl was recently blessed with many loving caregivers, and her family would like to offer special thanks to the outstanding teams at Morning Pointe Assisted Living at Greenbriar Cove, the Skilled Nursing Unit at NHC of Chattanooga and Hospice of Chattanooga.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Pastor Steve McCary officiating.

The family will receive friends at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home (7414 Old Lee Highway) from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to their departure for the service.

Jean Pollard

Jean Lee Watkins Pollard, 70, of Ooltewah, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009.

She spent her early life in Sullivan County, Tenn., residing in Florida for a number of years. She had lived in Ooltewah for a number of years.

Jean was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tenn., received a BS from East Tennessee State University and received her MS at Vanderbilt. She had taught foreign language.

Survivors are her mother, Marguerite Watkins Edmunds, of Ooltewah; and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at Ooltewah United Methodist Church with the Rev. Amy Nutt officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Carl Poston Sr.

Carl Poston Sr., 82, of Knoxville, formerly of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, while pheasant hunting in Watertown, S.D.

He served during the closing days of WWII and the occupation of Germany in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a P51 Mustang and a P80 jet fighter crew chief. This all-jet unit was the first of its kind in Europe. His commander was one of only 21 aces in the war. He retired after 20 years of service in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Poston was of the Methodist faith. He was the founder and former owner of Montlake Public Shooting Center, a 50-year member of Soddy Masonic Lodge 418 F&AM, a member of the Alhambra Shrine, a life member of the National Skeet Shooting Association, member of the YMCA-Knoxville, an avid UT sports fan and outdoorsman, an inductee of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, Armed Forces Sports Hall of Fame and Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame. He won numerous world and state shooting titles and attended 40 world skeet tournaments. He taught gun safety to thousands of area schoolchildren, many of whom have taken up the sport of skeet shooting of which several were named to All-American teams. His last student was Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer.

Esther Fay Werndli, 80, of Chattanooga, died on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009.

Fay was a native of Chattanooga and was a member of Tyner Church of Christ. She had a special love for traveling and a great appreciation for our National Parks and National Wonders around the country. Fay was an active member of the Tri-State Loafers Camping Club.

She was a loving wife and mother and was loved by everyone who knew her.

Noveita Wilson

Noveita Trotter Wilson, of Chattanooga, died on Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, in a local hospital.

She was preceded in death by parents, E. Glen and Carolyn Pangle Trotter; brother-in-law, Doug Brown.

A lifelong resident of Chattanooga, Noveita was a graduate of Tyner High School, Tennessee Wesleyan College and the University of Chattanooga, where she was a member of the Ladies Trio, played in the marching band, and was selected homecoming queen. She also served as youth director at First Methodist Church.

While her husband, Jim, was in graduate school at Florida State University, Noveita served on the college staff as a secretary. During her husband’s time in the military in Atlanta, she worked at Rich’s Department Store. Noveita later began working as a model at Loveman’s Department Store, then became the fashion coordinator, serving for over 30 years. In 1984, she and Jane Isbell founded Noveita and Jane, Image and Fashion Consultants.

She also served as a volunteer at Ronald McDonald House for several years. She attended First Presbyterian Church for 25 years, and before that was a memer of Second Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir.

Noveita is survived by her husband of 55 years, James P. Wilson, of Chattanooga; and three children, J. Gregory Wilson and wife, Megan Wilson, of East Ridge, Karen Wilson Harper and husband, Don Harper, of Newbury Park, Calif., and Jennifer Wilson, of Knoxville; as well as three grandchildren, D.J. Harper and Nicholas Harper, of Newbury Park, Calif., and Gabriel Wilson, of East Ridge; two sisters, Jeannine Mitchell and husband, Damon Mitchell, of Hixson, and Nadien Brown, of Sevierville, Tenn.; two nieces, Connie Burlingham, of Sevierville, and Sondra Coffey, of Cleveland, Tenn.; two nephews, Marty Brown, of Knoxville, and Eric Brown, of Sevierville.

JASPER — Howard E. Barnette, 86, passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 2009.

Howard was the son of the late Robert and Myrtle Long Barnette.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Ruby Branson Barnette; and his sister, Anna Love Willis.

He is survived by one brother, DeArnold (Shirley) Barnette, of Chattanooga; nieces, Charlotte (Dallas) Durham, of Jasper, Tenn., Vera (Greg) Long, of South Pittsburg, Tenn., Cheryl (Adam) Quirk, of Frederick, Md., DeAnn Barnette, of Chattanooga; and one nephew, Robert (Leslie) Barnette, of Chattanooga.

Mr. Barnette attended Marion County schools and graduated from Marion County High School in 1942 and attended the University of Tennessee. He also served in the military for three years. He was employed by Stokley Van Camp for 13 years and traveled for 30 years as a factory representative for consumer products manufacturing.

Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of Rogers Funeral Home in Jasper at 2 p.m. CDT today with interment to follow in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Bettis-Dixon was previously employed by Central Baptist Church as secretary to Dr. Fred Guilbert, minister of music. She was also pianist in several area churches, including Brainerd Hills Baptist for 16 years; Oakwood Baptist Church in Chickamauga, Ga., for 10 years; and at the time of her death was pianist at East Ridge Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bettis-Dixon was preceded in death by her husband, Lester R. Dixon; and brother, R.L. Bettis.

Coleman Burroughs

RINGGOLD — Coleman Frederick Burroughs, 58, died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Burroughs was a graduate of the Brainerd High School class of 1969, and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1981. He also received his master’s and educational specialist degree in administration and supervision from Jacksonville State in Jacksonville, Ala., in 1993. He began his teaching and coaching career at Lakeview Middle School for seven years and followed his career path to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School for four years. He served as an administrator for seven years at Ringgold Middle School and as principal of Ringgold Elementary School for six years. He finished his career as director of student services for the Catoosa County School System for the last four years.

During his career as teacher, coach and administrator, he received numerous awards, honors and certifications. He was a member of the Ringgold United Methodist Church and attended the Seekers Sunday School Class. Coleman Burroughs’ life was filled with selfless acts of Christian service and will be remembered well by his family, the people he worked with and the children and parents of the Catoosa County School System whom he served.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Putnam Burroughs; parents, Virgil and Azalea Burroughs; brothers, Bill Burroughs, Richard Burroughs and Bob Burroughs; and a sister, Doris (Bennie) Cuzzort.

Survivors are his wife, Joan Fleming Burroughs; sons, Andrew F. Burroughs, Mark C. (Heather) Burroughs, Travis A. Lane, Graham A. Lane, both of Nashville, and David M. Lane; sisters, Bettye (Carroll) Parker and Barbara (Bud) Lindsey.

SUWANEE — Forrest Bryant Carpenter, 84, died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009.

Mr. Carpenter was born in Culpeper, Va. He was a longtime resident of Chattanooga, a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, and was a cartographer for the Tennessee Valley Authority. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, was a Marine veteran of World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post 95.

Mrs. McCracken was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Dwight Higley McCracken; granddaughter, Kathie Farrell; and four brothers.

Mrs. McCracken was born on July 9, 1913, to Arrie Mittie Hornaday Hall and William A. Hall. She was a homemaker and faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville and the Joy Class. She treasured her family and enjoyed living in Lawrenceville to be close to them.

ROSSVILLE — Angela Denise Shaver, 46, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009.

She had lived in the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas for most of her life and was a member of Cloud Springs Baptist Church. She was employed with the United States Postal Service, Flintstone Office, as a clerk for more than 21 years, and sold Mary Kay and home interior products.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Virginia Jo Johnson; and niece, Heather Nicole McIntire.

Survivors include her loving husband of more than 28 years, Dicky Shaver; daughters and sons-in-law, Angel Brooke (Donald Gregory) Raines, Leigh Danielle (Zachery William McCulley) Shaver and Teri Jacklyn Shaver, all of Rossville; sister, Gloria Susan McIntire, of Fort Oglethorpe; two grandchildren, Aubrie Brooke Raines and Donovan Eli Raines; and one nephew, Johnathan Lebron McIntire.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, in the Fort Oglethorpe Chapel with Brother Matt Hall officiating.

Burial will follow in the Lakewood South Memory Gardens.

The family will begin receiving friends after 3 p.m. Monday and prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Carl Steele

GUNTERSVILLE — Carl Eugene Steele, 71, died Saturday morning, Oct. 24, 2009.

Mr. Steele is survived by his wife, Glynda Steele; daughters, Vicki and husband, Eugene Tremmier, Jackson, Miss., Amber and husband, Shawn Ryan, Trenton, Ga.; grandchildren, Bradley and wife, Rachael Tremmier, Tiffany Tremmier, Matalyn Ryan, Jaxon Ryan, Emerald Ryan; two great-grandchildren, Alora and Alana Tremmier.

Arrangements will be announced by Ryan Funeral Home, Trenton, Ga.
