Victim struggled with gunman before being shot

James Green, 40, was leaving his home bathroom last night when he was confronted by a masked gunman gripping a revolver. Police say he and the suspect then struggled over the gun and it fired, hitting Green in the upper right shoulder.

Green told police that the suspect told him to "give it up." He said he then pulled $17 from his pocket, threw it at the suspect and then went back into the bathroom and slammed the door shut.

Green and Vincent Hayes, 44, told police they’d just returned home from the grocery store when the shooting occurred, according to a police release. Police responded to the shooting call at a home on the 2300-block of E. 14th St. at 7:45 p.m.

Hayes told police he heard noise in the front of the house and was entering the home when the suspect told him to “give over his money.” He took $120 from his pants pocket and gave it to the man, but was still shot in the right thigh, police say.

The incident marks at least 65 shootings with injury in Chattanooga this year, according to Times Free Press archives.

Both men were transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Police are investigating the incident and have not released any named suspects as of 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
