An elderly woman's home was destroyed by fire in the Highway 58 area this evening, Chattanooga emergency services say.

Although no one was in the home at the time, several explosions occurred inside the house and one firefighter received minor injuries from flying debris, Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mark Hutchings said.

Hamilton County EMS transported him to Erlanger Medical Center for further evaluations, according to a news release.

The home's smoke alarm was activated at 6:56 p.m., Amy Maxwell with the Hamilton County EMS said. When the fire department arrived on scene the garage was fully involved with fire, she said.

The garage was contained quickly but the fire had already spread through the attic and the rest of the house, Maxwell added.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and will be under investigation by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, the EMS said.

Maxwell said the house is a total loss and damages are estimated at $75,000.
